A. Karen Shirrell, 81, of Noblesville, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at Kindred Hospital Indianapolis North. She was born on October 1, 1943 to Aldridge and Freda (Richardson) Hornsby in Connersville, Indiana.
For the last 47 years, Karen was a loyal, dedicated member of Calvary Apostolic Church in Noblesville. Although she was not the first member to attend the new church at the time, she was the first person to reach out and inquire as to when they were going to be open so she could begin attending services there. Karen arrived two years later and is acknowledged as an original founding member.
Karen was very honored by her church and held the church above everything else in her life. She was the go-to person for anytime a bake sale was happening. Karen enjoyed baking and getting sponsors for her church bake sales and anything else she could do to raise monies for her church building fund through the years. She was quite the salesperson!
Karen was a hard worker. She maintained a job at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for 32 years, holding a few different positions there and retiring from the hospital as a medical billing rep. in 2008. Karen was known for her pancake breakfasts and homemade chicken and dumplings when her young kids were still at home. Karen loved her family and was very close to her sisters, Pam & Barbara, and her mother, Freda.
She is survived by her siblings, Jim (Joanna) Hornsby of Connersville, Pam (David) Dugle of Florida, Fred (Crystal) Hornsby of Greenwood, Roger (Linda) Hornsby of Arkansas, and Tom (Chris) Hornsby of Greenwood; children, Rodney (Pamela) Ailes of Noblesville, Rebecca Simmonds of Noblesville, Reid Daniel (Elizabeth) Ailes of Arcadia, and Nichole (Memo) Shirrell of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Jessica (Joe) Rodriguez of Noblesville, Alexis (Connor) Dubbeld of Noblesville, Christopher (Beth) Simmonds of Noblesville, Erika Ailes of Arcadia, Audrey (Adam) Cote of Olmsted Falls, Ohio, Nicklaus (Mirissa) Ailes of Arcadia, Angelica Dumes of Indianapolis, and Mercedes Dumes of Indianapolis; and 19 great-grandchildren with 2 more on the way by years' end.
In addition to her parents, Karen was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Chandler; and her grandson, Matthew Ryan Ailes.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, with Home-Going Services at 12:00 pm, on Monday, June 2, 2025 at Calvary Apostolic Church, 16400 Cumberland Road, in Noblesville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Apostolic Church Building Fund, 16400 Cumberland Road, Noblesville, IN 46060 (http://calvaryapostolicchurchofnoblesville.com).
