My deepest sympathies are for the family and friends of Abdurrahman Wahid at this sad time. Soon the Bible says: The God of all comfort will, wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.

Dear Wahids: Please accept our warmest sympathies and be comforted knowing that God is “near to those that are broken at heart, and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.” (Psalm 34: 18). He can give us ‘power beyond what is normal’ to go on from one day to the next. (2 Corinthians 4: 7).

One of the all time greats. Not only a wonderful leader, but there was nothing Abdurrahman did not know about card tricks and growing roses in dry climates.

Also, he knew how to handicap throughbred horse races. I once ran into him at the Jacarta airport. We were between flights and struck up a conversation, which lead to the subject of horse racing. He gave me two key rules, which I promised never to tell another soul. These tips proved so successful that I have been able to retire from my medical profession, and make a fine living following the racing circuit around the world.

He and his family are, and will remain in my prayers.
