James Abner Gresham passed away peacefully on October 19, 2024, in
New Albany, MS, at the age of 88. Born on February 3, 1936, in Union County, MS, Abner was a man whose life was marked by his dedication to his work, his love for the outdoors, and his unwavering commitment to his family.
Abner was the beloved son of the late Stewart Vardaman Gresham and Clara Mae Lauderdale Gresham. He was a cherished brother to Regina Windham, Sammie Merritt, Nancy Chunn, and Frances Wooten. Abner was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Nora Ruth Nix Gresham, his brothers Johnny, Bill, and Bobby Gresham, and his sisters Evelyn Jordan and Linda Denton. He was also a loving stepfather to the late Diane Palmer and Jerry McMillen; and a special friend and caretaker, Polly Owen. Though he is no longer with us, Abner's legacy continues through the lives of his numerous nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren, who will remember him fondly.
Abner's professional life was as robust and varied as his personal interests. He was the former owner and operator of Glenfield Radiator and co-owner of Glenfield Mechanics, where his hardworking and hands-on approach earned him the respect of his colleagues and customers alike. Later, he dedicated his skills to maintenance for Piper Impact, where he continued to demonstrate his reliability and expertise.
Those who knew Abner understood his passion for the great outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, finding solace and joy in the quiet moments spent in nature. His love for gardening was evident in the meticulous care he took of his plants and the bountiful harvests he shared with those around him.
Abner was also known for his love of staying connected with his family and friends. He enjoyed calling them regularly, sharing stories, and checking in on their well-being. This thoughtful gesture was just one of the many ways he showed his love and care for those in his life.
Described as handy and thoughtful, Abner could fix almost anything and often did so for those around him. His ability to solve problems with his hands was matched only by his capacity to listen and offer wise counsel to those in need. Despite being hard-headed at times, it was this very trait that underscored his determination and resilience in the face of life's challenges.
Abner's life was one of meaningful simplicity and quiet strength. He was a man who valued the simple pleasures in life and understood the importance of hard work, family, and friendship. His presence was a comforting constant in the lives of those who knew him, and his absence will be deeply felt by all.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at United Funeral Service from 11:30 a.m. until the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be at Glenfield Memorial Gardens.
