Abner Simonton Obituary

SIMONTON, Jr., Abner Armstrong

The family of Abner Armstrong Simonton Jr. mourns his passing on Wednesday, April 2, at the age of 75. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and cherished memories with family.

Abner took pride in being a native Atlantan, attending Sarah Smith Elementary, The Lovett School and Northside High School. He met another Atlanta native, Jan Bachler, and they were married in June of 1973. Together they welcomed two sons, Abe and Scott.

An avid sports fan, Abner loved the Georgia Bulldogs and took great joy watching his sons in their baseball and football endeavors. He loved supporting the teams and participating in the Chain Gang for Riverwood High School football.

As a longtime member of Ansley Golf Club, Abner enjoyed spending days on the golf course and celebrating a successful round with friends in the clubhouse.

Abner was a dedicated businessman, starting his business, A.A. Abner Supply and running it successfully for 40 years. The business is still in operation today.

Abner is survived by his wife, Jan Bachler Simonton; his eldest son, Abe and his wife, Marcie Chenault Simonton, and grand-daughter Amelia; his youngest son, Scott and his wife, Elizabeth Gadaleta Simonton; his sister, Betsy Simonton Regan and her husband, Don; his sisters-in-law, Leslie Garges Bachler and Gay Bachler Kallao; and countless friends and loved ones who will miss him dearly.

Abner, I sure am going to miss you, Old Friend! I met you when I first came to Lovett school at the age of 15 and we became fast friends! You were always popular and everyone admired your athletic ability but I most admired your always being honest and loyal, the best traits in a person! We somehow made it together thru high school and remained close friends thru the years. I was there when you had your first date w/ Jan and shared lots of life´s adventures w/ you! RIPeace my friend, you have lived a great life, I will never forget you, your pal, Mark

Jan, Abe & Scott,
I have spent the last week thinking about Abner and what a great guy he was. Some 25 years ago I was a new salesman here in Atlanta when Abner was the first customer I called on. I knew after we spent 30 minutes talking sports and Atlanta, I found someone special. He might not have known at the time but he was a great mentor to me. The many memories and times spent talking out back in the warehouse will not be forgotten. I will miss him dearly and pray that he is at peace. My condolences to you all and your family.
Sincerely, Jim

Abner was one of the best. We were in the same 7th grade class at Lovett and remained friends forever. Abner cared so much about all his friends and made sure we got together with some regularity. He and his wife, Jan, were perfect for each other and threw "can't miss" Christmas parties. I will miss him and was so happy to have known him.

Abe, my sympathy and thoughts are with you and your family at the loss of your dad. I got to know him through his help with Raider football. On game nights, we never had to worry about the chain crew because they were all so dedicated and reliable. His involvement on the "Chain Gang"was such a blessing for all of us coaches. His dedication was much appreciated. Sorry to hear of his passing.
Sincerely, Coach Goss
