Adele F. Chappell

Adele Frances Chappell Adele Frances Chappell, of Brevard, passed to her eternal home on April 8, 2015 at age 83. She fought bravely against the cancer which took her stamina, speech and mental clarity but her courage and grace remained to the end. A memorial service will be held at St. Philips Episcopal Church 256 East Main Street, Brevard at 11 A.M. on April 16 with Reverend Rob Field officiating. Her husband of 55 years, Russell N. Chappell Jr., survives her. Her three sons: Christopher, Thomas and Paul, and daughters in law: Sara, Dianne and Allison; have given her eight grand children and one great granddaughter to cherish. Eleven hand-made quilts in their homes serve as tokens of her love and skill. She instilled a love of music and service in her sons; a professional musician, a minister and a music therapist. This love is now passing to the third generation. Adele grew up in Hastings on Hudson near New York City, was awarded a BA in Music Education from The College of Wooster in Ohio, an MA in Music Education from The University of Michigan and, in 1988, a Masters in Divinity from what is now Bexley Hall Seminary. She taught Music from 1953 to 1959 in Michigan. After her marriage she moved to Rochester, NY and formed a puppetry business. She also directed an adult choir for eleven years and helped to found a Montessori School. A shift to the Episcopal Church brought out a deeper interest in religious education for youth and of faith formation. She assumed parish responsibility for education, resourcing and program support. Shortly after graduation she was named Director of Resources for the Rochester NY Diocese and helped organize service and educational ministries for parishes in the diocese. In her productive retirement to Brevard, she shared her many gifts with St. Philips Episcopal Church and the community: music, teaching, leadership, drama; and all with compassion and humility. A skilled violinist and choir leader, she formed and led youth choirs, handbell choirs and sung and played for services. Her leadership skills shone in many outreach ministries and in the integration of religious education with Christian service. Her loving hands touched many in the congregation and in the community. She also served on the Board of Sharing House, played in the Brevard Philharmonic, was a spokesperson for Heifer International, tutored children for El Centro and, with other string players, gave grade school string music demonstrations in behalf of the former Transylvania Chamber Orchestra.
