July 14, 1925 - February 17, 2026
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Agnes Kryzer. Agnes Kryzer of Beroun, MN passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones at Timber Pines Assisted Living in Pine City on February 17th, 2026. She was 100 years, 7 months, and 3 days old.
Agnes Ann Runa was born on July 14, 1925, to John and Anna (Toman) Runa in Brook Park, MN and grew up on the family farm. She was the eldest of 8 siblings. As a child, she was always outside helping her Pa, and he fondly called her “Chief”. Wherever he went, she could be found. Agnes attended country school and high school in Brook Park until 11th grade. She graduated from Pine City High School in 1943. After graduation, she attended Rasmussen Business College in St. Paul for Shorthand. She lived with her Aunt Mary and would travel home every weekend to continue working on the farm. She worked at Northern States Power for 4 years, First National Bank for almost 25 years, and retired in 1990 from Plastech where she worked on an assembly line. However, retirement for her didn’t mean slowing down.
On June 26, 1948, Agnes married Jim Huml, and they were married for 11 years until his passing. During that time, they established a farm just east of Beroun, and they welcomed a daughter Mary Ann.
On August 19, 1961, Agnes married Francis Kryzer. Agnes and Francis were married for 42 years. They welcomed 3 more children - Barbara, Dan, and Lori. Agnes and Francis milked cows, raised a variety of animals, crop farmed, and had large vegetable gardens. There was always something ready to harvest or weeds to pull. Agnes spent a lot of time canning what they harvested.
Agnes and Francis were the biggest fans of their grandchildren - Missy, Bryce, Kayla, Emma, and Jack - attending most if not all of their activities and programs. After Agnes retired from the workforce, she and Francis babysat their three oldest grandchildren for 10 years. They enjoyed these years very much and made a lot of wonderful memories during that time. On multiple occasions, Agnes would say the best years of their lives were watching their grandkids. Later on in life, Agnes met the apple of her eye, her great-grandson, Francis. Before ending a conversation, she would always ask, “How’s our boy doing?”
All who knew her, know that she was a fantastic cook and baker, especially her kolaches. She loved hosting and no one left hungry when coming to her table. Agnes always had some sort of treat in her house and would remark “you know me and my sweets”. If she didn’t have a fresh batch of something made, you could always find something in her candy dish. She had a deep love for gardening and was always very proud of her flower beds. Agnes was also a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Beroun. She spent numerous occasions helping serve meals for funerals, providing altar flowers from her garden, and frying chicken at the wee hours of the morning for the annual Beroun Baazar.
Agnes loved being on her farm and was happiest there. She lived there for 77 years until shortly after her 100th birthday.
This past summer, she was blessed to celebrate her 100th birthday with many loved ones. She was so touched and spoke frequently on how perfect the day was.
Agnes is survived by her children Mary Ann Huml of Hugo, Barb (Joe) Smetana of Pine City, Dan (Laurie) Kryzer of Beroun, and Lori (Jeff) Hamlin of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren Missy Smetana, Bryce (Sarah) Kryzer, Kayla (Austin) Gahler, Emma Hamlin, and Jack Hamlin; great-grandson Francis Gahler; sister Kathryn Schlaeger; and sister-in-law Alice Runa; many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her first husband of 11 years Jim Huml and her second husband of 42 years Francis Kryzer; parents John and Anna Runa; brother John Runa; sisters and brothers-in-law Elsie (George) Cabak, Margaret (Joe) Ploub, Marcella (Jim) Pangerl, Genevieve (Willie) Kick, Carl Schlaeger; stillborn baby sister; sisters-in-law Mary Bauer and Bernadette (Gordy) Lindholm; and infant grandson Kerian Kryzer.
Agnes will be remembered by her hard work ethic, her skill to always carry on a conversation at all times, her ability to find laughter and joy in all parts of life, and her deep love she had for her family and friends. Her life was dedicated to her family, time spent together, and the simple moments.
A special thank you to the staff at St. Croix Hospice and Timber Pines for providing the best care for our girl.
Father Thomas Galarneault will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial for Agnes: 11 AM; Thursday, February 26, 2026 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Beroun. A time of visitation and reviewal is planned from 4-7 PM; Wednesday, February 25 at the Swanson Funeral Chapel in Pine City and also one hour prior to the Mass at church.
