Agostino DeThomasis Obituary

DeThomasis, Agostino "Gus" EAST GREENBUSH Agostino "Gus" DeThomasis of East Greenbush entered into eternal life on April 9, 2021, at the age of 82. Coming to America in 1955 at the age of 15, he settled in the City of Rensselaer and later moved to the Town of East Greenbush. He worked many years in the construction field under the Laborers Union #190. Working on many area municipal projects including construction of Interstates 787 and 90 and the Empire State Plaza. He later worked for BASF in the factory and in security services and maintained the facilities at AFSCME Local Council 82, until his retirement in September 2000. He also had his own tree service business for over 40 years. Gus was a "jack of all trades" including electrical, plumbing, carpentry and masonry. He was often the handyman of the neighborhood and was always willing to lend a hand to his family, friends and neighbors. Many sought him out for his knowledge and advice as well. Early in life he enjoyed traveling and was especially fond of N.Y.C., and being tour guide for visiting family. Later in life he found joy in spending weekends at his camper on Sacandaga Lake and vacations to Ocean City Maryland. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family, especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Elizabeth "Betty"; his sons, Joseph (Dolores) and James DeThomasis; and daughter, Michelle A (John) Collins. Proud "Pop"of Nicholas (Madelena), Zachary, Vincent and Felina DeThomasis and Ashley and Matthew Collins. Siblings, Giuseppe (Rosa), Pasquale (Angela) DeThomasis, Maria (Gerardo) Petrosino, Antoinette (Jerry) Deyoe; and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank the Evergreen Nursing Home for their care and compassion in his final days. Gus was a very special man. I will treasure memories of him arriving at my home in Menands with his lil doggie - climbing trees at my home - later to come down and enjoy a glass of wine with my father for a job well done. A man that could fix anything and was more than generous - on one cold winter night when my furnace wasn't working he came right over to help me out. Always with a smile and such a very kind soul. I will remember Gus for his kindness. Will remain in our memories forever.
