Akuot Akol Obituary

Akol, Akuot Garang Thuch Akuot Garang Thuch Akol was born in Wangulei, South Sudan on January 1, 1949 and passed away on January 12, 2021 in Jackson, Michigan. She was preceded in death by, her husband, Bul Duot Bul, five children (Achiik, Nyang, Deng, Mathiang and Adhieu), grandsons, Duot Makuach and Aluong Kuer, as well as, father Garang Thuch Akol, mother Akol Atem Alaak and three siblings (Akuol, Manyuon, and Athok) and two step-brothers. Akuot is survived by her three children, first son Kuer-Maketh Bul Duot (wife Apajok Kuir Maketh and their children; Duot Kuer, Bul Kuer, Koch Kuer, Agau Kuer, Abul Kuer, Akon Kuer), second son Makuach Bul Duot (wife Abuk Awai Piok and their children; Agau Makuach, Yar Makuach, Akol Makuach, Bol Makuach, Kuer Makuach) and third son Bol Bul Duot and his wife Carrie Duot and their two daughters Lydia Agau Bol & Grace Anon Bol. Akuot had co-wives. First wife; Abul Atem Jurkuch (9 children), second wife; Achok Barach Jurkuch (6 children), third wife; Achan Lual Malang (3 children), fourth wife; Aluong Mabior Deng (1 child) and Akuot Garang Thuch was the last wife with 8 children. Akuot was a strong woman of faith who loved her family and friends with unmatched enthusiasm. She would go out of her way to help anyone in need. She was such a caring individual who always put other people's needs first before her own. An example being, one time she was given a Talking Bible as a gift that read passages to her in Dinka and she knew of a friend who was unable to read her Bible, so Akuot selflessly gave her Talking Bible to her friend. Akuot was well known for composing and singing traditional songs at community gatherings. She overcame many trials and tribulations as the result of the civil war between North Sudan and South Sudan, such as losing her two younger children (Deng and Adhieu) in the early 1990's and many relatives. One would not be able to tell all the challenges she faced in life as she always smiled and laughed. Akuot spent roughly 15 years in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Northern Kenya, but not once did she ever complain. In 2017, she was given the opportunity to come to America where she spent the last four years in Michigan with family and friends. In the South Sudanese community, everyone respected and treated her like she was their own mother. She was Kokok (grandmother in Dinka) to a lot of people in her community. She will be missed greatly, never forgotten. A celebration of her life will be held at Watson Funeral Chapel in Jackson on Tuesday, January 19, 2021. A visitation will take place at 12:00pm and the service will follow at 1:00pm with Bryce Gernand officiating. Additionally, interment will be held privately at Woodland Cemetery right after the service. For those family and friends unable to attend due to current restrictions, the service will be livestreamed on the Watson Funeral Chapel website at watson-funeral-chapels.com, under Akuot's obituary, scroll down to where it states that "This event will be live-streamed", click on icon to access video.
