Alan Wayne Kaufman passed away Friday, August 1, 2025, at the Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Born December 23, 1941, in Valparaiso, Indiana, he was the only child of the late Eugene Perry and Orpha Agnes (Rodabough) Kaufman. He spent the majority of his childhood in Idaville, Indiana. A member of the Class of 1959, Alan graduated from Union Township High School in Monticello.
During the Vietnam era, Alan served in the United States Air Force from August 11, 1960, through August 10, 1966. He was a longtime member of the American Legion. His duty to country continued later in life, serving with Civil Defense.
On March 4, 1965, in Logansport, Indiana, he was married to Gail Jean (Smith) Kaufman. She preceded him in death on June 17, 2018.
Alan attended Valparaiso Technical School and was an electrician. He retired early from Delco Electronics in 1987 due to a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. He was a longtime member of the IBEW.
Faith was an important part of Alan's life. He grew up in the Idaville Methodist Church and remained active in various congregations over the years-Monticello's First United Methodist Church, Logansport's First U.M. Church, and most recently, Cross~Wind U.M. Church.
Alan was deeply involved in Masonic fraternal organizations. In 1964, he became a Master Mason at the Burnettsville Masonic Lodge. A life member, he held dual memberships at Logansport's Tipton Masonic Lodge as well as the Royal Center Masonic Lodge, where he served as Past Master. He was also a member of the Shrine Club, the Scottish Rite, York Rite, and the Royal Center Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
He coached Pixie League and Logansport Junior Miss Softball when his daughters were growing up. Alan enjoyed chess and competed in tournaments at both the local and state level. In the 1970s, he was a member of the CB Club, known by his handle "Skipper," with Gail as "Skipper's Helper." When it came to pastimes, Alan especially loved fishing and floating down the river.
Surviving are his four children: - Jennifer (Mark) Severson, Nerstrand, MN, - Ruth (David) Kain, Asheville, NC, - Sarah Kaufman (Brian Dodds), Southington, CT. and Eugene Kaufman (Jenny Sera), Logansport, IN; grandchildren, Felicia (Lincoln) Lawrence, Andrew (Samantha) Murrell, Aldon (Brittany) Severson, Jordan (James) Rose, Rick (Sarah) Kain, Samantha Kain (Luke Huls), Perry Sharp (Mikayla Bedell), and Devinne (Doug) Murphy. The Cass County Honor Guard will present a final salute at 6 p.m., followed by Masonic rites and a Shrine processional walk-by. A time of reflection to honor Alan's life will take place before processing to the Idaville Cemetery. The Cass County Honor Guard, together with members of the U.S. Air Force team, will accord Alan with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Logansport's Tipton Masonic Lodge or Royal Center Masonic Lodge building funds, or - Idaville Cemetery Association.
