Alan Mitchell Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alan Kent Mitchell ("Kent"). He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, who died peacefully at the age of 84 on December 12th in Savannah, Georgia.

Born in Washington D.C. on September 27, 1941, Kent was the son of Francis Ray Mitchell ("Frank") and Catharine Parsons Mitchell and brother to Rae, Gail and Jeff. Kent grew up in Catonsville, Maryland, and served as a Specialist E4 in the U.S. Army National Guard after graduating from Catonsville Sr. High School. He began his career in his father's construction materials supply business, Duo-Fast, where he soon became part owner. He moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1975 where he raised his sons, and married his wife, Patricia Kirk Mitchell ("Pat"). He successfully expanded the business to 26 locations ranging from Florida to Pennsylvania and changed its name to Mid-Atlantic Fasteners, where served as the CEO. Kent was respected and admired by his employees, many of whom remained close friends even after Kent retired and sold the business in 2008.

After retiring, Kent and Pat relocated to The Landings community on Skidaway Island in Savannah, Georgia, where he enjoyed playing golf and tennis, riding in a motorcycle club, attending services at Skidaway Community Church, and making new friends. Kent loved traveling the world with Pat, spending time with his sons and grandchildren, deep sea fishing during summers in Ocean City, Maryland, spending winters on the island of Maui, Hawaii, and watching the Orioles play ball on TV.

Kent is survived by his loving wife Pat of 43 years; his son Chad Mitchell (wife Amy) and his cherished grandchildren Wyatt (12) and Isla (11) of Murphy, Texas; his son Troy Mitchell of Asheville, North Carolina; his step-daughter, Kelly Plyler (husband Trent) of Sherrills Ford, North Carolina; and a host of extended family members and friends who will forever remember his generosity and kindness.

A visitation will be at Fox & Weeks Hodgson Chapel this Thursday, December 18th from 4:00 until 6:00. The Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Wounded Warrior Project or Spanish Oaks Hospice in Kent's memory.

Kent leaves behind a legacy of generosity, hard work, humor, and kindness. His presence will be dearly missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
