Alan Schulz Obituary

Alan Edward Schulz graduated from this life on August 8, 2021. He passed away unexpectedly in his home at the age of 78. He was born December 2, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois to Melvin Edward and Mary Elizabeth (Justice) Schulz. Alan was raised in Chicago and moved to Salt Lake City in 1967 to begin his teaching career that lasted over 60 years. He taught in the Salt Lake City district 36 years, 3 times in China and continued substitute teaching following retirement.

Alan married Ruth Lorraine Murdoch in 1968 in the Idaho Falls Temple. They were married for 53 years. Their family included a daughter Rebecca Lynn, two adopted sons, Mark Alan and Matthew Choi and foster children, Elsie Begay, Nam Tran, Vinh Pham and John McDonald. They sponsored numerous Vietnamese families.

Alan and Ruth started their married life in Salt Lake City where they lived for 15 years. They moved to Centerville in 1983 and lived there until 2005. They moved back to Salt Lake City to the triplex they owned. They served a mission together in Malaysia and 6 years at the LDS Hospital. They taught together in Beijing, China for one year. In November 2018, Alan and Ruth moved to Summit Vista, a retirement community in Taylorsville, Utah.

Alan's mission statement was, "I am an ODD person; organized, diligent and disciplined in keeping commitments, the commandments and covenants." Alan was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

He was our good bishop in the 17th North Ward when my husband and I were first married. Such a good man. I remember the genuine love he exhibited to each member of this ward, which had many challenges. Once, a fellow who was struggling with mental health, went up to the pulpit, wielding what appeared to be cap guns. I remember Bishop Schulz, gently, lovingly whispering in his ear, walking him down from the pulpit, helping him and giving him the dignity that he deserved as a child of God. It left an impression I´ll never forget.

The Family of Blair Stephens remembered Alan fondly for keeping teaching interesting! They were brothers to the last and taught some very spicy kids! As my Dad always said, "if you can save ONE kid by teaching them, your whole career is worth it!" And they did!
Alan personified, "it's nice to be important, but it's more important to be NICE!"

Hereby I would like to extend best regards to all the friends and loved ones of Mr. Schulz. I met him and his wife Ruth in a gym in Sandakan, Malaysia in 2006 when they respectfully tried to interest me in the mormon religion and invited me for diner and a tour through Sandakan.
All the best,

Ruth and family, so deeply sorry for your loss. I remember him well and the kind notes he would always send. You are in our prayers.

Our friendship with Alan and Ruth began in 1972 when we were newlyweds in 17th North Ward in Salt Lake Stake. Alan was in the bishopric and Ruth was a Relief Society leader. We moved away, and did not see them for decades, but we met up again a few years ago at Summit Vista, where we became good friends once again, and did many fun adventures together, including some traveling. His loss is immense to us and many others, as we continued to interact regularly since we moved south. We have great memories and have learned so much from our friendships. We pray that all the family will feel much comfort in the Spirit as you deal with this unexpected loss of a great man and a great leader.
