Mr. Albert Henry Burts Sr.

FOREST ACRES Service for Albert "Al" Henry Burts, Sr., 89, will be held Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at Kathwood Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 12, 2014 from 4 until 6:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mr. Burts died Sunday, March 9, 2014. Born in Honea Path, S.C., he was the third of six children born to the late Clarence Michael Burts and Minnie Lee Gailey Burts. After high school, Mr. Burts attended Clemson University where he was drafted to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He completed boot camp at Bronson Field in Pensacola, Florida and was deployed to the U.S. Naval Base in Argentia, Newfoundland. He was selected for the Navy V-12 Officer Training Course and chose the University of South Carolina to complete his training. It was while attending the University of South Carolina that he met his future bride, Effie Lowe Gambill, also known as "Sandy". Mr. Burts was a devoted family man who took great pride in his community. He owned and operated Burts Hardware and was a partner in the Beltline Drive-In Theater. He served on the Forest Acres Town Council from 1962 - 1966 and as Mayor of Forest Acres from 1966 - 1972. With an entrepreneurial spirit and strong work ethic, Mr. Burts owned and operated Green Manor Apartments from 1966 - 2014. He enjoyed ham radio (K4YQD), boating, gardening, working with his hands and passing his knowledge along to others Mr. Burts was a member of Kathwood Baptist Church, a member of the Friendship Class and served on the Property Committee. He was a life member of the United States Power Squadrons, a past Commander of the local Lake Murray Power Squadron and a past Commander of USPS District 26. Surviving are a daughter, Linda Burts Fellers (Fred); sons, Albert H. Burts, Jr. (Mary) and Richard M. Burts (Janet); grandchildren, Denise Fellers Hudson (Eric), Susan Sullivan Burts, Fred H. Fellers, III (Carter), Gunnar G. Burts, Walker N. Burts and S. Griffin Burts; great-grandchildren, Thomas G. Fellers, Sophia M. Hudson, James H. Hudson and Hulsey C. Fellers; sisters, Ruth B. King and Patricia "Patsy" B. Morgan. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of sixty years; his sister, Edna Burts and his brothers, David Burts and Clarence Sidney "Sid" Burts. The family would like to thank Sheila, Minnie, Arlene, Stefanie, Betty, Tressy and Lutheran Hospice for the love and care they showed Mr. Burts.
