Albert Chou Obituary
He is survived by his daughters Sylvia, Margaret (Michael Woolston), and Pauline (Edwin Abate Jr.). Gōng Gōng to eight grandchildren: Kathryn (Blake), Laura (James), Daniel (Rebecca), David (Mary), Emilie, Abbey, Oliver (Fatima), and Evan. Great grandfather to Ava, Kaley, Kayla, Luke, Nolan, Chase, and Isla. Loving brother to Marcelle and Micheline.
Albert was born in Shanghai, China to a prominent family. After high school, Albert immigrated to the U.S. to study Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley. During this time, he met Colette who was a student at Lone Mountain College for Women (University of San Francisco). They were prolific world travelers and golfers. They built and enjoyed 53 years of marriage together before Colette's passing.
After graduating from UC Berkeley, Albert joined IBM Research and Development. Later, he co-founded Shugart Associates, a floppy disk drive start-up in the 1970s. He and a handful of other entrepreneurial engineers were responsible for starting the hugely influential disk drive industry for personal computers. Over his lengthy career, Albert received numerous awards and U.S. patents for the development of disk drive and printer technology. Whilst at IBM, he received his master's degree in mechanical engineering at Santa Clara University.
Albert was devoted to his family, gently guiding and generously supporting them throughout his life. He embodied humility, grace, and quiet strength-an enduring example to those around him. A true gentleman in every sense, he lived with integrity and kindness. In the silence left behind, memories carry all he was: a steady hand, a warm heart, and a life deeply lived. He will be truly missed, and his memory will remain a source of comfort for those who knew and loved him.
A private memorial service was held at Los Gatos Memorial Park.
