September 13, 2025
Albert Carmical Eagan, "Al" to his friends and family, "Grandpa" to Abbie and Derek, and "Dad" to Gail and Mike, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2025. He was in his home surrounded by family.
Albert was born in Atlanta, Georgia on August 7, 1928 into a family that instilled a moral compass and work ethic that guided each of his 97 years. A graduate of College Park (Georgia) High School, Al's childhood included cutting and loading timber into railroad cars and delivering groceries on his bicycle from his parent's Little Five Points store in Atlanta.
While studying at North Georgia College in Dahlonega, he was employed part time by the forest service to control fires in the region. He later graduated from the University of Georgia School of Journalism in Athens where he met his future wife, Joan Cain. The two were wed on July 15, 1950.
Serving as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Al was assigned combat duty in the Korean War where he was awarded The Purple Heart.
Following a lengthy recovery from his wartime injuries, he worked briefly for Dodge Publishing in Atlanta before opening his own business, Al's Hardware in Hapeville, Georgia. He served a term as President of the Hapeville Chamber of Commerce and in 1962, earned an MBA from Georgia State University. He was soon recruited by the U.S. Department of Defense to work in Contract Management.
He and his wife Joan raised their family in Forest Park, Georgia. In those years, Al served as a Deacon in the First Baptist Church, was a Boy Scout Leader, served on the local housing authority, and was active in the Kiwanis Club. In 1989, Al and Joan moved to Cumming, Georgia where they continued their church and community involvement. Albert Eagan was a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather. He was a business owner, a defense department official, a published author, and in his "retirement", was the president of two land management corporations. He built three houses, two boats (one on the bottom of Lake Lanier today), loved gardening, and taught Sunday School until health limited his mobility. The individual lives of Al's family and friends will begin to follow diverging paths from this time. But we take with us the opportunity to share, both directly and indirectly, the influence of his wisdom and compassion with those whose lives we will encounter on our journeys, like the slowly expanding delta of a river.
Albert C. Eagan was preceded in death by his parents, Essie and Henry Eagan, his sister, Rebekah Eagan Clarke and his wife, Joan Cain Eagan. He is survived by his daughter, Gail Eagan Newsome and son-in-law Michael Newsome of Gainesville, Georgia, his son, Michael Eagan and daughter-in-law Cynthia Swan-Eagan of Manistee, Michigan, granddaughter Abigail Newsome of New York, grandson Derek Newsome of Titusville, Florida, niece Sally Cain Bishop of Chapin, South Carolina, nephew Robert Clarke of Huntsville, Alabama and nephew William Clarke of Clarkesville, Georgia.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, September 30, at the McDonald and Son Funeral Home in Cumming, Georgia, Dr. Bob Jolly, Officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 am with Funeral Services at 11 am. Interment will immediately follow into the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, Georgia.
