In memory of
Selma Naccach-Hoff
August 13, 2018
Pat,
My earliest memories of Al were as your fiance, the person who gave you that huge diamond which we, in
your geometry class, couldn't ignore! How lucky we considered you back then, to have in your life a man who showered you this way. And, over the years, I came to know him through his writing: articulate, concise, knowledgeable about Manchester, its history and its people, and always revealing a depth of understanding of the human condition.
He was an icon to many, but your loss and that of your family must be especially difficult. Please convey my very deepest sympathy to the Wades as well, and know that I am thinking of you, especially.
Warm regards,
Selma Naccach Hoff

Very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Nettles. He was the Assistant Manager for my Little League baseball team about 35 years ago. Was a great coach, mentor and person. So glad to have crossed his path in life. Sincere condolences to his wife and family.

The "old school" is where Al came from..the old school of journalism, as we once knew it.
Al had a God-given knack of incinerating a story when it required spark.
Yet he could blend eloquent editorial restraint mixed with a dash of humility if a story needed it.
AL's prose was the measured chaperone which rode herd on our daily and Sunday news columns over four decades.
During his long Union Leader career, assign him to a Little League game...a Red Sox playoff game...a wedding, or the inevitable obituary which requires such tenderness..Al Nettel usually got the "call" from the "bullpen" to handle it.
To Pat and to Mary Susan Mary and I send our prayers, and our fondest memories of Albert, during their time of reflection and remembrance.
I was proud to work side-by-side with him
for 38 years.

The obit doesn't mention that Al and his wife were devotees of Saturday night dances at the American Legion Sweeney Post in Manchester. As an AP reporter I knew him for four decades as a colleague and fellow Newspaper Guild union member; in recent years in our retirement we would meet at Sweeney for the dances and commiserate about the decline of the news business. Al was not only a good dancer, but also a good union member and a good guy.

"Al had a great sense of humor he would seek me out in the Comp Rm to give advice for that day & at the end of the day when he left work he would check to see if I had a good day. Al was one of a kind, a very caring guy. Sincere Sympathy to his family, GOD Bless.''

Al and I spent a lot of time together covering Manchester's City and School government.
I treasured his insights. I loved his wit and that he could find humor anywhere.
He was simply a reporter's reporter.
He was complete, detailed and fair.
RIP .
