East Lyme - Albert Fillis Goodwin, 82, of Niantic, passed away peacefully on June, 21 2009, at Bayview Health Care Center with family members at his side.Albert was born on July 7, 1926, in Schenectady, N.Y., the only son of Dr. Albert F. and Barbara H. (Weiss) Goodwin. Upon graduation from the Gloversville, N.Y., High School in 1944, he joined the U.S. Army, serving in the Philippines and Japan. After discharge, he attended and graduated from Syracuse University with a bachelor of arts degree in business administration. He then worked for the Texas Oil Co., in New York City and completed a master of business administration degree in economics at New York University at the same time. From 1956 to 1962 he taught economics at Grove City College in Pennsylvania, where he met his wife of 47 years, Renate, whom he married in 1962 in Germany. He then began graduate studies at St. Andrews University in Scotland, doing research on the life of noted 16th century economist John Craig. After returning to the U.S., he taught economics at Pennsylvania Military College in Chester, Pa., St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., and Salisbury State College in Salisbury, Md. After retiring from teaching, he worked for General Dynamics in Groton from 1974 to 1982.After retirement, he volunteered at Mystic Seaport, the Stonington Lighthouse Museum, and at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital. During his life, Albert was an active sportsman, avid reader, and spent time researching a wide variety of subjects. Among other organizations, he was a member of the Elks, Masons, Odd Fellows, the VFW, and the American Legion.In addition to his wife, Renate, he is survived by his sons, Dr. Andrew A. Goodwin of San Leandro, Calif., and Edward P. Goodwin of Elkridge, Md., and his beloved dog, Katie.Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 25, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. Burial arrangements are incomplete at this time.
