Albert A. Kertes Jr. (Capt. Al), 87 years old, passed away on Thursday, March 30, 2023 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick.
Al was born on December 2, 1935 in Garwood, NJ to Albert and Mary (nee Hopta) Kertes. He was raised in Scotch Plains, NJ before moving to Plainfield, NJ in 1948. He was a graduate of Plainfield High School, after graduation Al enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1953 serving in Korea, on various destroyer type ships and guided missile cruiser "USS Galveston" thru Dec of 1962 serving as "leading radioman". Upon discharge Al transferred to the "U.S. Naval Reserve" as an radio/electronics instructor until 1966.
Upon discharge from the regular Navy, he joined the N.J. Bell Telco. and worked in "Special Services", inclusive of teletype, data, and remote test systems. Al retired after 30 years. After a short respite, he went to work for "Hekimian Laboratories" in Rockville MD. as a "Project Engineer" finally retiring in Dec of 98.
During this time he spent many years in the "Watchung Power Squadron" attained the title of "Advanced Pilot". Al was a resident of Toms River for 44 years, Ardent Radio Amateur N2GWZ, member of the "Jersey Shore Amateur Radio Society"
He is predeceased by his wife Jane (nee Radlak) Kertes in May of 2017. Surviving Al are his 3 sons Edward Kertes and his wife Michele, Kenneth Brunda and his wife Diane, and Frank Brunda and his wife Susan; 4 daughters Sheryl Claus and her husband Thomas, Laurie Stolz and her partner Domenick Rotolo, Debra Spring, and Leslie Garibaldi and her husband James; brother Robert Kertes and his wife Patricia; 12 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Visiting will be Tuesday, April 4th from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, 2482 Church Rd., Toms River. Funeral mass will be Wednesday 11:00 AM at St. Justin's RC Church, 975 Fischer Blvd., Toms River. Arrive at the funeral home at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow to Ocean County Memorial Park. www.silvertonmemorial.com
