Al Lorenz taught my former partner Christopher Clay at Pratt Institute, and in the Al Lorenz Studio, in the late 1980s. Al was a tremendous positive influence on Chris. Aside from his unique and prolific artistic output, Al was a fun loving and sweet guy. I remember more than one of his annual beach parties. Chris (now also deceased) kept all of the custom-made beach party T-shirts. Our own children loved Al's vibrantly and intricately illustrated kids books (Jack and the Beanstalk, Greek myths, etc.) and Buried Blueprints puzzles. You could peer for an hour at an Al Lorenz studio drawing, just appreciating the detail, whimsy and humor in it. The cityscape illustrations and Myth Illustration series drawings that Chris did with the Studio were among Chris's most cherished possessions, as they are now for Chris's surviving family members. I'm sure this is true for all of Al's former students. Rest in peace, Al, and condolences to Maureen and the family. But what a gift of a life!
