Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sweet's Funeral Home on Jan. 20, 2026.
Albert Ross Mauri, just short of his 94th birthday, died in his home in Poughkeepsie, in sight of his beloved Hudson River, on January 15, 2026. Born in Buffalo NY to Ross Albert Mauri and Lena Barcellona on February 13, 1932, Al grew up with his one sister Lynn (Laman).
After serving in the U.S. Army stationed in Austria, from 1953 into 1955, Al served in the National Guard for ten years. Al attended Cornell University and graduated in 1961 with his degree in architecture. During those years of rigorous studies, in 1957 Al married Stephanie Gail Woods, who was also in the Cornell school of Architecture and their son Ross was born in 1958. (Ross may have been one of the youngest students ever to attend Cornell!)
Al's architecture career began at Turley, Stevator & Walker (TSW) in Buffalo in 1961. Having been made partner of the firm, he moved to the Hudson Valley in 1963, and took up residence and his professional work in Highland. Al directed the architectural work for all the Marine Midland bank branches which were being constructed from White Plains to Albany. In 1967 Al opened the Poughkeepsie office of TSW&M and in 1973 went out on his own forming Mauri Associates Architects.
Much of Al's design and architecture work remains visible throughout the Hudson Valley, primarily in business and corporate structures. His successful practice lives on today through the work of several of his own protegees.
While Al's work excellence was a most significant focus of his life, he fully enjoyed many activities and pastimes with numerous good friends. From snow skiing to water skiing, Al's form was as flawless as his dress. The same could be said for tennis, bicycling, kayaking, racquetball, and pickleball. Being on the water, particularly the Hudson River, on his boat or kayak were times that brought Al pleasure. He also enjoyed puttering outside and just 'hanging out' at his beloved property on the Hudson in Hyde Park. Affectionately, many of us remember sharing happy times with Al at 'Summer Camp'.
Al was a resident of Hyde Park for over 50 years with the past 12 as a snowbird in Sarasota Florida where he had several treasured friends and neighbors. The past six months Al returned to the area where he and his son Ross, daughter-in-law Barbara, grandson Tyler and his wife Clara with new baby Lola, granddaughter Dale (Doscher) and husband Joseph, could spend time and share memories together. Al had the joy of holding his first great grandchild and of attending the wedding of Dale and Joe this past September. Al also spent time with his nephew Mark Laman and his wife Mary and many of their children. Al is also survived by his nephew Harold Laman, and his wife Stacey, of Florida.
Al is predeceased by his wife Stephanie and his sister Lynn.
Al remained able to sit and watch the boats go by on the majestic Hudson each day and ride his scooter alongside it, often in his last months. He enjoyed the love of his family and many friends in his final months.
Memorial calling hours will be Friday January 23, from 10am-noon at Sweet's Funeral Home, Route 9, Hyde Park. There will be a celebration of life immediately after calling hours in Poughkeepsie.
Al's ashes will be entombed privately at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the Mauri family respectfully requests memorial donations to The Mauri Family Scholarship at Marist College; Office of College Advancement; 3399 North Road,
Poughkeepsie, NY 12601; or Walkway Over the Hudson (walkway.org).
