Albert McClain Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Harley Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. on Jan. 31, 2026.
Albert Junior McClain, 83, of Chappells, husband of Mary L. Scott, passed away on his birthday Friday, January 30, 2026 at Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont.

Born on January 30, 1943 in Tennessee, he was the son of the late George Albert McClain and Ruth Rollins McClain.

Albert retired from Greenwood Mills after more than 30 years of dedicated service. But Albert wasn't the type to sit still in retirement. He found his joy outdoors, specifically on the seat of his lawnmower. He loved cutting grass so much-and did it so often-that he famously managed to break his zero-turn mower and had to go out and buy a brand-new one just to keep up with his "hobby." His generosity extended beyond his own fence line; he frequently mowed his neighbors' yards, not just to stay busy, but because he genuinely loved being helpful to those around him.

Affectionately known as "Paw Paw" by his grandchildren, Albert was a loving man with a deeply caring heart. His grandbabies were the light of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with his family.

When he wasn't with his family or manicuring the lawn, you could find him taking fishing trips to Santee; making trips up north with his friend J.P. Cook to scout for old car parts or being behind the wheel of his '77 Ford F-100; visiting his favorite Mexican restaurant in Ninety Six, where he bypassed the tacos every time for his favorite chicken wings; or scratching off lottery tickets. He had a love for animals especially his beloved cat, Sara Lee and his dog, Peanut, who was ironically and jokingly nicknamed "Beast" despite his actual size.

Albert McClain was a man who understood that a life well-lived consisted of a mowed lawn, a classic truck, a cold lake, and a family that knew they were deeply loved. He will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of being his neighbor, his friend, or his family.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; son, Mike Scott (Shannon); son-in-law, Richard Lipe; sisters, Marie Lipe, Joyce Jones, Jackie Floyd, and Debbie McDaniel; grandchildren, William Scott (Shelby), Kim Scott, Stacy Schultz, and Scotty Lipe; great grandchildren, Carrie (James Johnson), Jade, Blaise, Cloey, Kingston, Carlee, Caroline, and Jolene; and great great grandchildren, Brantlee, Melanie, and Joziah.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa Lipe and sister, Betty McClain Weeks.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Harley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Marty Dorn and Rev. Randy Ouzts officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be William Scott, Mike Scott, Jade Schultz, Blaise Schultz, David Simpson and Matthew Jerome.

Honorary pallbearer Willie Mayes aka Shadow Man.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff of Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont for their love and care of Albert.
