Mr. Albert Spires “Al” Norman, Jr., 70, of Whiteside Drive, Elberton, husband of 35 years to Carol Jean Rousey Norman, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at Nancy Hart Nursing Center.
Al was born in Elberton on June 18, 1954, the only son of the late Albert Spires Norman, Sr. and Joel Lavenia Hall Norman. He was a 1972 graduate of Elbert County High School and furthered his education at North Georgia Technical College where he studied mechanics. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Elberton and the retired owner/operator of Norman Automotive Company.
A fanatic about anything mechanical, Al enjoyed working on cars, boats, and anything that needed fixing. Always one to help others, he never stopped working and while in the nursing home, he kept a ratchet set close by and was always willing to fix a broken wheelchair, television, or anything that needed to be repaired. He loved fast cars, NASCAR racing, and flying model airplanes. Al looked forward to gathering with the breakfast club at McIntosh Coffee Shoppe each morning, especially since eating was his favorite pastime. Camping was a passion of Al’s, and he could often be found grilling meals anywhere he camped.
Surviving, in addition to his wife Carol, are his daughters: Alison and Thomas Lamb of Guyton, Alaina Norman of Lavonia, and Ashley and Spencer Risner of Royston; grandchildren: Charlotte and Asa Payne, Andi and Drew Risner, and Addison, Garrett, and Grayson Lamb; sisters: Linda and Hoke Fortson of Austell, Ann Haynes of St. Augustine, FL, and Deany and Ken Edmonds of Sandy Springs; mother-in-law, Kathryn Rousey of Bowman; and nephews and niece: Robby Haynes, Chip Fortson, and Sherry Popovic.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 25, from 6:00-8:00p.m. at Berry Funeral Home.
Funeral services celebrating Al’s life will be conducted on Friday, July 26, at 2:00p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral with Rev. Michael Marcengill officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park. Pallbearers will include Spencer Risner, Thomas Lamb, Chip Fortson, Robby Haynes, Bobby Moore, and Cory Parham, and honorary pallbearers will include Glen Parham, Joe Johnson, Tim Hendrick, and Kenneth Little.
Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in his memory to First Baptist Church of Elberton Ramp Ministry, 231 Heard Street, Elberton, GA 30635, or to Nancy Hart Nursing Center Activities Fund, 2117 Dr. George Ward Road, Elberton, GA 30635.
The family wishes to extend their sincerest appreciation to the staff of Nancy Hart Nursing Center for the care extended to Al during his stay there.
