Alberta Willis Fanning, affectionately known as "Baby Ruth," was a beacon of light and love to all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Born on May 15, 1930, in Tuskegee, Alabama, she carried the warmth of the South into every room she entered until her peaceful passing in Cleveland, Ohio on September 15, 2025.

Alberta's journey on Earth was marked by a fervent belief in the power of faith, education, and community. She was a proud graduate of Central Senior High in Cleveland, where she was honored as the Female Athlete of the Year, a testament to her determination and spirit. Her educational pursuits did not end with her own schooling; Alberta continued to empower the youth in her community, having received training and certification as an Educational Aide. Her motto to the children she mentored, "never say I can't," was a reflection of her unwavering optimism and encouragement.

Her commitment to service was evident through her active participation in the PTA at Gracemount Elementary, Robert H. Jamison Junior High, and John F. Kennedy High Schools. Alberta's passion for nurturing young minds was matched only by her love for the Lord. As a devout Christian, she lived her life as a testament to kindness and generosity, embodying the scripture, "Let all that you do be done in love" (1 Corinthians 16:14).

Alberta's creative spirit shone brightly through her hobbies. An avid gardener, she was recognized by the Call & Post Beautification Contest for her stunning floral arrangements. Her hands were rarely still, as she delighted in sewing, arts & crafts, and the joy of dance. Alberta was not just handy but profoundly creative, and her kindness was felt by all who were graced by her presence.

Though Alberta's family feels the profound loss of her passing, they take comfort in knowing that she led a life rich in love and service. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Walter Sr. and Bennie Lee Willis, her husband Fred Sr., her sons Wilbert and Fred Jr., and her siblings Walter Jr., Earnest, Robert, Roberta, Betty, and Patricia. Alberta's memory is cherished by her surviving sisters, Alice Faye King, Gwendolyn Miller, and Jacqueline Bell, her sister-in-law Mary Frances Ferguson, her niece Josie (Raymond) Sallee, and a host of other nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins, friends, and her dear friend Ms. Grace.

As we celebrate Alberta's life, we are reminded of the words of Helen Keller: "What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Alberta Willis Fanning's love, wisdom, and spirit remain a part of us all, inspiring us to live with the same compassion and gusto that she exemplified every day. Her legacy will continue to flourish in the lives she touched, in the gardens she tended, and in the hearts that cherish her memory.

Rest In Peace. Til that day that we all rise up and meet him in the air. Peace to the family and friends of this amazing woman of God.

If you are fortunate enough for God to place someone truly special in your life, you should cherish them. Alberta was that person for me. I am deeply saddened by her passing, but I feel blessed to have known her.

From the very first time we met, we connected, and for the past 33 years our friendship never wavered. She became my son´s "official grandmother," and I know she could not have loved him more if he had been her biological grandchild. The bond my son and I shared with her was truly special.

Though I grieve her loss, I know that God calls His angels home when their work here is done. I will always be grateful for the gift of her friendship, her love, and the many memories we created together. She was more than a friend-she was family, and her place in our hearts will remain forever.
