Ms. Alberta “Bert”  McLeod at age 96, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at MUSC Health Medical Center in Florence, South Carolina. Throughout a prolonged illness, she stayed strong in her faith in prayer and even a stronger faith in God.

“Bert” as she was affectionally called by family and friends, was born in Florence County on October 17, 1926, and attended Florence County Public Schools. At an early age, Bert was baptized and joined Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Timmonsville, South Carolina, under the leadership of Reverend Solomon Eaddy. She later became a member of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Florence, South Carolina and served faithfully until she began to experience health problems. Her love for singing gospel music motivated participation in both church choirs. Bert was a homemaker who had a flair for cooking and sharing meals with family and friends. She was also a caregiver to numerous nieces and nephews.

Ms. Alberta was preceded in death by her parents; Warren and Willie Mae Hicks McLeod; three brothers, Willie McLeod, Charles McLeod and David McLeod, Sr., two sisters; Moella Martin and Caretha Lee; and a granddaughter; Latoya “Toya” McLeod.

Ms. Alberta provided kinship care and nurturing to three children, whom she raised as her own; Lynn Williams and Garnett Jett (Earnest) both of Florence, South Carolina and Trena Hinton (Sam) of Jersey City, New Jersey. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Sheronika Ham (Korenzo), Conchetta Burroughs, Shaqunita Lee, Shakeyta Weaver (Jordon) and Earnestine Jett all of Florence, South Carolina; Ashley Hinton and Zoey Hinton both of Jersey City, New Jersey, seven great grandchildren; five sisters; Ollie Mae Gainey and Lillie Moore (of the home) both of Florence, South Carolina; Buleah Gordon of Stockbridge, Georgia; Carolyn Smith and Lottie McLeod all of Jersey City, New Jersey; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Ms. Alberta was a delightful person and a faithful servant of God. It would be her hope that today we do not sit in sadness but celebrate the ultimate reward that she has received, reuniting with her heavenly family, but most importantly with our Savior Jesus Christ.

Please keep the family of Alberta McLeod in your thoughts and prayers.
