Alberta Weems, affectionately known as “Berta”, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2025, in Indianapolis at the age of 82. She was born on February 8,1943 to Albert and Hattie Arnold.
Alberta attended St. Rita Catholic School (Indianapolis’ first African-American Catholic Parish) during her primary years and then went to Crispus Attucks High School. While in high school, Alberta became pregnant with her first child, Robbin Ann (Eldridge) McGrady, and the following year, had a second daughter, Brenda Lee (Eldridge) Tyler. Later, she opened her home to two boys, Dwight and Michael Simmons, who she helped raise and called her sons.
Most of her life, Alberta was a Certified Nursing Assistant and dedicated her work career to the local nursing homes, working the longest at Delaware Nursing Home. She was well respected by her colleagues as a hardworking and dedicated employee.
Alberta was committed to her family and friends. She enjoyed caring for them and helping however she could. No one ever went without food or a roof over their head. She was known for her “famous greens” and quiet personality!

Alberta leaves to cherish her memories, children: Robbin Ann McGrady (Ron), Brenda Lee Tyler, Dwight Simmons (Kimberly) and Michael Simmons; grandchildren: Tanieka Jackson (Marco), Tracey Tyler, Vanesia Robinson and Micah Stone (Willie); great-grandchildren: Marco Jackson II, Brandon Stone, Tyrel Jackson, Norvel Terry IV, Quintez Fisher Jr. and Makiyah Robinson; great-great-grandson, Jah’Vel Terry Patterson; father: Albert Arnold (Greta); sister, Regina Weakly (Steve); lifelong friend, Debra Martin; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss her dearly.
