Mr. Alex G. Howe, III, age 84, a lifelong resident of Rome, passed away, peacefully, on Friday evening, February 13, 2026, at Rome Health.
Born in Rome, on May 17, 1941, Alex was the son of the late A. Gray and Loretta J. (Haggerty) Howe. He was raised and educated in Rome, graduating with the RFA Class of 1959. He then continued his education at Mohawk Valley Technical Institute, earning his Associate's Degree in Banking, Real Estate and Insurance.
On June 22, 1963, Alex was married to the former Cora Sue Johnson at St. Mary's Church. Together, Alex and Cora shared in a loving and devoted union of nearly 59 years, until Cora's passing on May 4, 2022. A piece of Alex's heart went with his wife that day and their family takes comfort in knowing they are now reunited in their Heavenly kingdom.
Alex spent his career in banking, retiring in 1998, as Vice President of M&T Bank. Throughout the years he worked at various banks and branches throughout the Mohawk Valley; always serving his community with professionalism and dignity.
Community involvement was very important to Alex and through the years he was a member of the Rome Rotary Club, member and past Treasurer of the Rome Board of Realtors, Co-Chair of the Rome United Way, Real Estate division, member and past Treasurer of Rome Federal Little League, Captain and Auditor for the Rome United Fund Campaign and member of both Mount Hunger and Greenway Fish and Game Clubs. He also proudly served as Director and President of the Camden Chamber of Commerce for many years.
Beyond all of these philanthropic activities, Alex was also a life member of the Rome Hook & Ladder Volunteer Fire Department, as well as a life member of the Rome Volunteer Fireman's Benevolent Association, having served as a Trustee during the 1980s.
As a very devout Roman Catholic, Alex spent his younger years attending Mass at the former St. Mary's Church, where he served as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and Chairman of the Finance Committee through 1991. He then became a parishioner of St. Peter's Church, where he has been very involvedfor the last 35 years.
Alex was a wholesome, kind and giving person who left an indelible mark on his community, Church, friends and most of all, his beloved family. He leaves his daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Patrick Harris, of Rome; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Dana Howe, of Rome; grandchildren, Evan Patrick Harris, Allison Rae and Patrick Costello, Erin Kate and McKenzie Harris and John D. Howe; great-granddaughter, Althea Rose Harris; and his bonus granddaughter, Gabby Nieves. He also leaves his sister, Sheila G. Briggs; along with several extended family members and friends.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend Alex's Funeral Service on Thursday morning, February 19, 2026, at 11:00 AM, from St. Peter's Church, Rome, where his Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Procession will follow to St. Mary's Cemetery, where Alex's earthly remains will be laid to rest.
