Al left home at the age of 14 to further his ambition to work and support his parents. He served a short period of time in the US Army. With the death of his dad Willie Norton, he returned home to support and work the family’s farm. Al later moved up north to Brooklyn, New York to pursue a better opportunity in life. There he met and married Alcesta Martin in 1959. They had three sons together, Alexander Jr, Stanley and Theodore.
While in New York, Al found his passion in boxing and carpentry. He was a Golden Glove Champion had one professional bout. Due to financial hardships, Al decided to pursue his love for carpentry.
