Alfred Campo

Alfred "Dino" Campo, age 85, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025, in Moraga, California. A devoted husband, father, brother, and friend, Alfred lived a life marked by quiet strength, deep faith, and unwavering dedication to his family and work.

Born on to Sicilian Italian parents on March 24, 1940, in Tunisia, Alfred began his journey in a world far from the one he would eventually call home. He grew up speaking Italian at home and receiving primary education in French. As a young man in the 1950s, he apprenticed at a furniture store in Tunisia, where he first developed his lifelong passion for craftsmanship. This early experience laid the foundation for a career that would span decades and continents.

When he was 17 years old, Alfred, his mother, and two of his siblings immigrated to the United States. After arriving in New York City, Catholic Relief Services helped the family to relocate to New Orleans to be around other French-speakers. They aided them to find jobs and housing, connecting them with other Italians and classes to learn English. At 19 years old, Alfred traveled to California where the weather was more agreeable, and found a residence in Oakland where his family joined him a couple years later.

Alfred was drafted into the United States Army and served on active duty from 1962 to 1964. Stationed in Okinawa, he trained in communications and discovered a love for billiards and ping pong-games that would remain favorite pastimes throughout his life. His time in the military also deepened his sense of discipline and service.

After completing his military service, Alfred briefly worked at Pacific Bell before joining his brother Salvatore in maintaining foreign cars, a role that combined his mechanical aptitude with his love of automobiles. Eventually, Alfred found his professional home as a shop carpenter at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Throughout nearly 29 years of dedicated service until his retirement in 2002, he contributed to countless projects with precision and pride.

Alfred was a man of many talents and interests. He built laminate countertops with skill and care; he enjoyed woodworking projects that showcased both artistry and utility. Whether tending to his garden or setting out on travel adventures with loved ones, Alfred embraced life's simple pleasures. He had a fondness for boating and cars, loved playing golf and soccer, and never turned down a good game of ping pong. Dancing brought him joy-as did sharing meals, stories, and laughter alongside those closest to him.

A practicing Catholic throughout his life, Alfred led by example through devotion to faith and acts of service. He was soft-spoken yet determined-a steady presence who offered guidance without fanfare. He spoke Italian, French, and English fluently and used these gifts to connect across cultures with warmth and humor.

Family was at the heart of everything Alfred did. He was the beloved husband of Donna; cherished father to Brian and Elysa; dear brother to Salvatore (Anneliese) and Yolanda; and loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Frances and Emmanuel Campo; brothers Rosario and Guy; but their memories remained close to him always.

Alfred's legacy includes not only the physical things he built but also the lives he shaped through kindness, patience, humor and above all-love. He cared tenderly for his mother during her battle with Alzheimer's disease and was an attentive father who modeled compassion through action.

May Alfred Campo's memory bring comfort to those who knew him-and may his gentle spirit continue to inspire all whose lives he touched. A Funeral Mass will be held on September 2, 2025, at 10:15 AM at St Monica Catholic Church, 1001 Camino Pablo, Moraga, CA, followed by reception lunch in the Peace Room at St Monica. An Interment will be held from 02:30 PM to 03:00 PM at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 1965 Reliez Valley Rd, Lafayette, CA.
