Alfred Lykins Obituary

Published by Legacy on Nov. 27, 2022.
Alfred "Al" Oliver Lykins went to be with his Lord on November 23, 2022. He was born on September 2nd, 1927, to Frances and Homer Lykins. At age 4, he lost his mother. His dad was left with 3 girls and 2 boys to raise as a single dad. Al graduated from Georgetown high school and then served in the U.S. Navy. After moving to Austin, he went to work at Checker Front Grocery Store and met Mildred Sunberg, who introduced him to her daughter Joan. Joan and Alfred were married on March 22, 1951, at First Evangelical Free Church in Austin. On December 29th, 1952, they had a daughter, Cheryl Jo. Then on March 14th, 1957, they had a son, Gary Steven.
Al worked for the Texas Land Office and the Railroad Commission of Texas, where he was the supervisor of central records. In March of 1966, Al opened his own business, Records Research, an oil and gas consultant company.
Popo, as he was also known, was blessed with two grandchildren, Tamra in January 1972 and Duane in July 1977. He also enjoyed spending time with his many great-grandchildren. He was a faithful member of the Evangelical Free Church of Austin, where he served as trustee, church chairman and an elder. He was an avid bass fisherman and a member of the Austin Christian Bass Club. Eventually, he caught Walter, his name for the big bass. He won many trophies for fishing, showing how successful he was.
His beloved wife passed away in February 2011, just short of their 60th wedding anniversary. After some time living alone, he went to live at Parson's House and Tech Ridge Memory Care.
He is survived by his daughter Cheryl and her husband Bill Hayes, his daughter-in-law Sharon Lykins, granddaughter Tamra and her husband Jerry, grandson Duane and wife Jennifer; great-grandchildren Casey, Loryn, Kirstyn, Hayley, Madyn, Maxwell, and Jack; and his great-great-grandchildren Harper and Damien.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances Lykins, father Homer Lykins, sisters Beulah Kelly, Roxie Burklund, and Lottie Dittrich, brother Raymond Lykins; his wife, Joan, son Gary Lykins; and great-grandson Mason.
Tho lost to sight to memory dear.
