Alfred “Al” Eugene Miller, 84, of Albany, Georgia, transitioned to his heavenly home on September 24, 2024, at Wynfield Health and Rehabilitation Center. The family will receive friends at Mathews Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM. Following visitation, Minister Charlie Brown will officiate graveside funeral services at the noon hour at Andersonville National Cemetery.
Al was born in Culpeper, Virginia on September 13, 1940 to Alfred R. and Mary H. Miller. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Air Force. While faithfully serving his country, Al earned his high school diploma. During his time at Turner Air Force Base in Albany, Georgia, he met his future bride, Jeanette Bryan. They married in 1963.
In 1970, Al joined the Dougherty County Police Department. While working for the Dougherty County Police Department he completed the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He also attained an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Albany Junior College. Rising through the ranks, he loyally served the Dougherty County community for thirty-one years and retired in 2001 as assistant police chief.
He was a hardworking family man who always worked two or more jobs. It was common for him to change out of his uniform after working a midnight shift and head to Hayes Motor Parts where he worked as an engine builder. In addition to his work at Hayes Motor Parts, he picked up part-time security details when available.
He was a member of Gillionville Baptist Church and loved to travel. He, Jeanette, and their beloved dachshund travelled across the country in their motor home. Their furthest adventures took them as far north as Canada and as far west as California.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Bryan Miller.
Survivors include his children, Belinda Garrett (Ronnie) of Leesburg, GA; Alesia Shiver (Jeff) of Fernandina Beach, FL; and Eric Miller (Lynn) of Albany, GA; his grandchildren, Amanda Sanders of Leesburg, GA; Heather Lunt and Jennifer Harwell (Justin) all of Yulee, FL; Morgan Miller Stevens (Rob) of Atlanta, GA; and Madison Miller Walters (Read) of Charleston, SC; and his great-grandchildren, Avaree, Hunter, Jace, Kaelyn, Easton and Colton.
Those desiring may make memorials in memory of Al to St. Jude’s’s Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude’s’s Children’s Research Hospital was one of his favorite charities.
