Alfred George Pollard
1927-2023
Vancouver, WA-
Alfred "A.George" Pollard, devoted and adored husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend passed away and reunited with his wife and eternal companion, Ruby on Thursday September 28, 2023 in Vancouver WA. He was 95 years old.
A.George, or George as he was affectionately known, was born in Boise Idaho to parents Frank George Pollard and Ella May Armilda Asbury. He spent his childhood in Emmett Idaho until his family moved to Salt Lake City Utah in 1937. After graduating from Granite High School, and serving for a time in The U.S. Army, George served a Central Atlantic States Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the same Mission his father had served. George then joined the United States Air Force.
While in the Air Force, George met the love of his life, Ruby Ellen Peterson, on a double-blind date. Although he was not her date, he kept looking at the cutie across the table and the rest is history. They married on November 5, 1952 and settled in Topeka, Kansas. While there, George excelled, earning Airman of the Month. After he completed his service, George and Ruby relocated to the Seattle Washington area where George applied his Air Force skills to an accomplished career with Boeing at Flight Test Lab, which spanned 39 years.
George and Ruby raised 6 children in Kirkland, Washington, before relocating to Vancouver Washington, as empty nesters in 1995. They enjoyed 61 years together until Ruby's passing in 2014.
As a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, George was eager to serve the Lord and others, and served many callings, including Bishopric Counselor in the Kirkland area and Temple Ordinance Worker in the Portland Temple. He had an unwavering testimony of the Gospel and Home Teaching.
George loved being a husband, father, and grandfather. He was devoted to his loved ones; his family was his greatest treasure. He was determined and steadfast and had a talent for fixing anything, and he refused to replace something if it was still "functional".
Back in the day, George enjoyed early morning paper routes with his kids, spending time with his lovely wife Ruby, fishing for the large fish he called "Grand-dad" in the Tucannon River with his sons, camping and sleeping under the stars, The Pink Panther cartoon, helping his kids with homework, and staying up late and sleeping in. In recent years, George enjoyed volunteering in the Bookroom at Evergreen High School, doing jigsaw puzzles and Sudoku, visiting with family, watching Bonanza and Westerns, and relaxing in his big brown chair. He also had a lifelong love of reading, and chocolate-or vitamin CH as he called it.
George is survived by his children: Jorgene (Todd) Schmalle, George Pollard, Jess (Dede) Pollard, Rene' (Russell) Thurgood, Emily Pollard, LaNeya (Tim) Duling, grandchildren: Robert, Laura, Aaron, Rachel, Andy, Christa, Jared, Amanda, Jessica, Ryan, Jason, Brittany, Ephraim, Rebekah, and Aubree and 24 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind brothers Theron, Duone. Eric, George F, Marshall, Stephen, and Ted, and sisters Ruth, Deanna, and Nansi. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Frank, Kevin, and Alan, and sisters Virginia, Ruby, and Shirley.
Services for George will be Friday, October 13, 2023 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 14400 NW 26th Ave, Vancouver WA 98685, with a viewing from 12-12:45 and funeral services starting at 1pm. He will be laid to rest at Northwood Park Cemetery, 16407 NE 15th Ave, Ridgefield WA, 98642, with arrangements under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home, Salem, Oregon.
