Alfred L. Wassenaar Sr., age 84, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Sheldon Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon.
Funeral Services will be Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at 10:30 A.M. at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon. Rev. Greg Timmer officiating.
Burial at 1:30 P.M. on Wednesday, at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City, Iowa.
Visitation will be Tuesday, from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon.
Alfred Lawrence Wassenaar Sr. was born on August 15, 1925, in Orange City, Iowa. He was the son of Andrew and Susan (Wielenga) Wassenaar. He lived his youth in Orange City, where he attended the Orange City Christian Grade School.
He was united in marriage to Bernyce Wielenga of Orange City, Iowa, on September 3, 1943. They lived in Orange City and Middleburg, Iowa, before moving to Sheldon, Iowa. Bernyce passed away in July of 1959.
He was united in marriage to Martha Beuzekom Zylstra on August 15, 1963, in Sheldon. They lived in Sheldon. Martha passed away on October 29, 1991.
Alfred was a farmer and cattle feeder. He was active until he was 80 years old. He had to slow down because of his health, but never retired.
When Alfred was younger he enjoyed raising colts and breaking horses with his children. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, and traveling to visit family in Denver, Colorado and Redlands, California. He enjoyed going on a vacation each summer with his family.
Alfred's family was important to him. He raised his family to be strong, know how to work and have the Lord in their life.
He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon.
Alfred passed away on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Sheldon Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon.
Those left to cherish his memories are his children: Robert and Alicia Wassenaar of Orange City, IA, Alfred Lee and Pam Wassenaar of Sheldon, IA, Nyla and Dan Harskamp of Orange City, IA, Wade and Kristi Wassenaar of Sheldon, IA; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two step sons: Andrew and Kathleen Zylstra of Sheldon, IA, Jack and Julia Zylstra of Sheldon, IA; two brothers: James and Mildred Wassenaar of Orange City, IA, Stan and Kathy Wassenaar of Yucca Valley, CA; special friend: Eleanor Blankers of Sheldon, IA.
He was preceded in death by his wives: Bernyce and Martha; his parents; his sister: Wilhelmina and husband Bill Gesink; his brothers: Joubert and wife Nellie Wassenaar, Ralph and wife Nette Wassenaar, Donald and wife Alyda Wassenaar.
