SECOND CREEK, WV – Herbert "Alfris" Dunbar, age 92, of Second Creek, WV, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Lindside Healthcare Center in Lindside, WV. Born July 25, 1933, in Monroe County, WV, he was the son of the late Herbert Shield Dunbar and Lida Pearl Bostic Dunbar.
Alfris worked at B.F. Goodrich, where he retired. Alfris liked telling stories about his younger days and talking about old cars he had over the years. He was a member of Hillsdale Holiness Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Thelma Mae Wilson Dunbar; his sisters, Annie Dunbar Forren, Eunice Lee Dunbar Jackson, and Aileen Dunbar Eggleston; and one brother, Melvin Dunbar.
Survivors include his sister, Louise Dunbar Johnson of OH; one son, Charles Dunbar of Second Creek, WV; three daughters, Anita (Ralph JR) Wickline of Gap Mills, WV, Kay (Danny) King of Second Creek, WV, and Karen (Lonnie) Hoke of Gap Mills, WV; grandkids, Jessica (Louie) Handy of Second Creek, WV, Tina (Marty) Williams of Ronceverte, WV, April King of Wolf Creek, WV, Leslie Wickline and Crystal Hoke of Gap Mills, WV, Jonathan Hoke of Second Creek, WV; great grandkids, Chelsea (Chris) Pence of Second Creek, WV, Kaycee (Kyle) McClung of Lewisburg, WV, McKayla (Seth) Comer of Lindside, WV, Maddi (Wesley Redden) Blair of Crawley, WV, Daniel (Katie) Smith of White Sulphur Springs, WV, Carson Handy of Second Creek, WV, Jasmine (Austin) Bennett of Wolf Creek, WV, Olivia (Aaron) Sparks of Sweet Springs, WV, Kendra White (Preston Sizemore) of Fayetteville, WV, Elye Grimmett of Gap Mills, WV, Benjamin, Michael, Chase, and Conor Smith of Wolf Creek, WV; great-great grandkids, Berklee and Kyler Comer of Lindside, WV, Axel Smith of White Sulphur Springs, WV, Kanaan and Bronwyn Redden of Crawley, WV, Ross McClung of Lewisburg, WV, Raelynn Bennett of Wolf Creek, WV, and Hunter Taylor of Second Creek, WV, and one great-great granddaughter due in December.
Alfris was a simple man who loved God, family, and friends. He loved going to church and devoted his time to serving the Lord. He was a very humble man who always sought to help others in any way he could. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving him.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at the Groves-Mann Funeral Home in Union, WV, with Pastors David Deskins and Freddie Bostic officiating. Burial will follow at the Carlisle Cemetery in Hollywood, WV. Visitation will be held from 1:00PM until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Daniel, Benjamin, Michael, and Eddie Smith, Marty Williams, and Kenny Eggleston will serve as pallbearers. Leslie Wickline, Seth Comer, and Austin Bennett will serve as honorary pallbearers.
