Alice was born on November 25, 1927 in New Albany, IN. She graduated from DePauw University with a B.A. in English Literature in 1949. She taught kindergarten 11 years at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She served as an elementary school teacher for 22 years with the New Albany-Floyd County Public School System with 20 years at Silver Street School retiring in 1989. Always invested in learning she brought worldwide cultures to her classroom. Moreover she brought a book’s characters to life for her students by performing as a character, ie. Amelia Bedelia.
Alice volunteered for many organizations: The Carnegie Center for Art and History, Friends of Fairview Cemetery, Farmington Gardens, Scribner House, School Trip Chaperone to Chicago and the Altar Guild at her beloved church St. Paul Episcopal.
Her adventuresome spirit was evident as a teenager when she earned a pilot’s license after 25 hours of solo flying. Alice played Bridge in four bridge clubs and enjoyed hiking with the Louisville Hiking Club, participating in SIBS activities, shopping at Lotsa Pasta and following IU Women’s Basketball. She especially liked the old Louisville Courier Journal. Her backyard perennial gardens were a beautiful sight. Many benefited from Alice being a wonderful cook and baker.
A good friend to many over her long life she was known for her sense of humor, practicality and determination. Her lifelong curiosity was an abiding virtue. She was truly interested in her family and friends and their families. She moved to Carmel Indiana into Assisted Living in 2022. An avid reader she continued listening to books daily after her vision was impaired by macular degeneration. Keeping all her friends and family members’ contacts in her phone was a big job. Her Google phone was an important function in later life.
