Alice Carolyn Coates, 81, died on January 31, 2026 at Berea Health and Rehab. Born in Halifax County to James and Mildred Coates, she graduated from Halifax County High School, earned her undergraduate degree from Longwood College and her M.Ed. from Virginia Commonwealth University. She was a teacher in Stafford County for 35 years and a member of the adjunct faculty at Mary Washington College for 15 years. She was also a Virginia Supreme Court certified mediator who volunteered in area courts for 15 years.

Alice held many leadership positions in local and state professional organizations and presented workshops at the local, state, regional and national levels. These included sessions on teaching techniques for math at the middle school level and peer mediation. She even presented a seminar on peer mediation in Moscow, Russia. She was honored as Outstanding Young Educator in Stafford County and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International.

Alice was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her sisters: Martha Coates of Chapel Hill, NC, and her family, and Mildred (Milly) Coates Cavin of King George County and her family. And by her many former colleagues, friends and Fairview Beach neighbors.

Alice's memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2026 at Covenant Funeral Services 10830 Patriot Hwy., Fredericksburg VA 22408. Her family will receive friends at a reception on the premises following the service.

Alice's burial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at McKendree United Methodist Church, 1100 McKendree Church Rd., Halifax VA 24558. Her family will receive friends at a reception in the fellowship hall following the service.
