Alice M Stephens, 93, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on January 10, 2026. She was born in Chicago on September 22, 1932, to the late Leo and Helen (O'Hare) Murphy. Alice enjoyed a 68-year marriage to the love of her life, the late Bob Stephens. She graduated from Loretto Academy in 1949 and worked with the Chicago Board of Education until the birth of her first child. Parenting became her career as she went on to have a total of eleven children. Beloved mother of Robert III, Allison (Brian) O'Mara, Matthew (Marianne), Monica (Darrin) Dovgin, Jeanne (Ed) Chianelli, Mary Carol (Rich Field), Meg, Dan (Tara), Martin (Kim), the late Rita Smith, and Andy (Robin). Dearest grandmother of 33: Justin, Maddie, Rachael, Megan, Alex, Shannon, Ryan, Nick, Carly, Nathan, Christina, Steve, Shauna, Brooke, Chloe, Olivia, Brianne, Paige, Molly, Maggie, Colleen, Katie, Connor, Emma, Regan, Claire, Liam, Brendan, Hannah, Aidan, Abby, Elaine, and Neil; cherished great grandmother of 23: Reed, Norah, Evan, Elliott, Emerson, Lily, Logan, Violet, Angelo, Rosa, Leona Alice, Bobby, Sabrina, Murphy, Arlo, baby Radaj, Evelyn, Leo, Isla, Emmett, Hayes, Benjamin, Evy. Dear sister-in-law of Lenore (the late Louis) Glasscock; fond aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Stephens; her parents, Leo and Helen Murphy; her daughter, Rita Smith; and two sisters, Catherine Veronica Faloona and Carole Hughes. Alice was an active member of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Chicago and later was a member of St. Boniface in Monee and St. Paul the Apostle in Peotone. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She brought love and laughter into her home and was loved and cherished by her family and many friends. Visitation will be at Hickey Memorial Chapel, 2100 Calistoga Dr, New Lenox, IL 60451 on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 511 N. Conrad Ave, Peotone, IL 60468 on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 10:00 am. Interment Mount St Patrick Cemetery.
