Alice Mae Wilbur, 96, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025, in Joliet, Illinois.
Born on August 13, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, Alice was the daughter of George and Phoebe (Lovell) Wilbur. She grew up with a strong sense of purpose and a love for learning that would shape her life's path.
Alice pursued higher education with distinction, earning degrees from both Illinois State University and the University of Virginia. Her academic achievements laid the foundation for a long and impactful career in education. She dedicated many years to teaching Spanish at Joliet West High School, where she inspired generations of students with her passion for language and culture. Her colleagues remember her as a devoted educator whose commitment to excellence left a lasting impression on the school community.
Outside the classroom, Alice led a vibrant and active life. A lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, her faith was a steady presence throughout her years. She found joy and camaraderie on the tennis court as an avid player who competed in numerous tournaments and participated in local clubs. Her opponents respected her competitive spirit and sportsmanship.
Travel was another of Alice's great passions-she delighted in exploring both domestic destinations and international locales, always eager to experience new cultures and landscapes. At home, she cherished the companionship of her beloved dogs, whose presence brought her comfort and happiness over the years.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, William Wilbur; and her longtime companion, Lester Settle. She leaves behind a wide circle of cousins, former colleagues from Joliet West High School, fellow tennis enthusiasts from tournaments and clubs, friends from church, and many others whose lives were touched by her warmth and dedication.
May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her and continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to share in her journey. A Visitation will be held on November 18, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Edward and Christ Episcopal Church 206 N. Midland Ave. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11 AM. Interment Woodlawn Memorial Park.
