Allan Fuller Blackmar, 98, longtime resident of Pine Plains, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2024 at his residence surrounded by his family. Born on September 29, 1925 the eldest son of the late George Christian and Myrtle (Skinner) Blackmar. He attended Attleboro School System and graduated from Attleboro Jewelry Trade School in Toolmaking. He entered the United States Army in 1943 and was a Heavy Machine Gunner with Company D, 273rd Infantry, 69th Division. His unit met the Russian on the Elba River at Torg au, Germany and was with the 18 Medium Maintenance Ordnance Company in the Army of Occupation until May 16, 1946, when he was honorably discharged. On September 18, 1948, he married Mary Eileen Packer. She predeceased him on November 18, 2007. Allan worked for Pleasant Valley Finishing Company in the 40's, STAMP in Red Hook during the 1950s and in 1956 began his career with IBM. He worked in Development & Research, at Poughkeepsie & Fishkill. At the end of his career he worked for the System Products Division. He was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club where he served as Treasurer. Allan was a Member of the American Legion for 70 years. Over which time he held various positions throughout Dutchess County which included Past Post Commander of Shacameco Post # 426, past Dutchess County American Legion Commander 1959-1960, past Dutchess County American Legion Adjutant, past Dutchess County American Legion Judge Advocate, past Chef-de-Gare of Voiture # 502, LaSociete Des Quarante Hommes Et Huit Chevaux and in 1999 was the Legionnaire of the year in Dutchess County and the Ninth District. He was presently Dutchess County American Legion Protocol Chairman, post Adjutant, Treasurer, Service Officer, Grave Registration Officer and the Dutchess County American Legion Grave Registration Chairman. In addition, Allan became a brother of the Masonic Stissing lodge No. 615, F. & A. M. on March 8th,1960, and served various roles within the lodge.
Allan also served his community as the President of Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains for over 40 years. He was also very involved with the Pine Plains Presbyterian Church where he was a former elder, deacon and served on the finance committee.
Allan is survived by his children, Kenneth A. (Marva) Blackmar, Susan J. (Russell) Newland-McCarty. His five grandchildren, Michael P. Blackmar, David L. (Catherine) Blackmar, Erin M. (Jeff) Curnan, Vincent G. Newland, and Nathan A. (Brittany) Newland. His seven great grandchildren: Scott Blackmar, Ryan Blackmar, Lilliana Tagg, Jaxon Curnan, Benjamin V. Newland, Logan M. Newland, Abigail MG Newland. Also, by his sister-in-law, Hazel Blackmar, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his wife, he was also predeceased by his son David L. Blackmar, and his son-in-law: Vincent G. Newland and brothers; Stewart W. Blackmar (Emily), Arnold F. Blackmar (Alice), John Roger Blackmar.
A time for sharing memories and offering condolences will be held on Friday, July 12, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm with a service by the American Legion at 6:30pm at Peck & Peck Funeral Homes, 7749 S. Main Street, Pine Plains. A funeral service will be conducted by Reverand Jan Brooks at the funeral home on Saturday at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
