Allan Dong Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Allan Dong passed away on Wednesday, July 17th from a solo motorcycle accident in Idaho. He was on his 21st annual GOOTR (Get Out Of Town Ride) motorcycle ride with close friends. Our hearts are broken and the outpouring of care and love has been overwhelming.
Predeceased by father Dong Ying Fook and mother Dong Won Gee. Allan was born in Victoria into a large family of 16 children with many ½ brothers and sisters. Allan was #14, Jack #15 (Sandy) and Willard #16. Allan was a loving husband, survived by his spouse of 39 years, Jan and wonderful dad to Nicole (Jason) and Stefan. Little angels, Janal and Cary passed away shortly after birth.

Allan's brother Herb was his role model and in turn, Allan was the rock to his younger brothers Jack and Willard. Allan attended Chinese school and sold newspapers at the corner of Fort and Douglas St every day. It was here in front of Specht's pet shop that he was introduced to the world of tropical fish. He became infatuated with fish leading to his 6 foot aquarium.

Allan spent his career in the IT field, working at Camosun College, Health Care Systems, and Sierra Systems where he made lifelong friends. Allan had a wide range of interests: hands-on construction, drafting projects, scuba diving, sailing, fishing, volleyball, softball, raising chickens from fertilized eggs to hatching them, dirt biking, riding motorcycles, attending live performances, and pickleball. During his short retirement Allan had more time for global travels and volunteering. He volunteered for Shaw Community Cable filming local events, at HeroWorks rebuilding tired charitable organizations, and at Langham Court Theatre, hanging stage lights and building sets.

Allan & Jan spent many summers at their lake front property at Lake Cowichan, enjoying the water, eating, drinking, socializing with neighbours & hosting friends. It was a labour of love transforming the raw land. They built many projects to create their summer oasis J.A.N.S. Retreat.

Allan lived a full life filled with love, laughter and curiosity. He had a way of encouraging others to do things out of their comfort zones. He was loved by so many and will surely be missed.

I offer my condolences to the entire family, especially to Jan and the children. I heard of Allan's accident last night from a former co-worker and was both shocked and saddened by the news.

I first met Allan about 48 years ago, virtually, as a high school student sending messages to students at Camosun College. Allan went by the monicker "Big Al", which was appropriate as he possessed a big personality. I joined him at Camosun for the next few years where we studied and socialized together. After college we both relocated to Vancouver for several years for career purposes, and then both later returned to Victoria. Our work paths intersected a few times over those years, but more importantly we shared a lot of volleyball, skiing, softball, camping - building, for me, great memories of Allan. Allan was an exceptional person - smart, funny, energetic, encouraging, and a fantastic example of what a husband and father should be. Generous is another attribute that comes to mind. My own life took a big turn a couple of decades ago and my friendship with Allan and Jan fell by the wayside unfortunately (my fault, not theirs). But I would still run into Allan every so often, usually at volleyball events, and it was always a pleasure to see him again, if only for brief moments. I know Allan will be missed by all the people he touched in his life.

I first met Alan 35 years ago while working on a project. We sure had a lot of fun. He was one of the nicest people I've met and will be missed.

So sorry for your loss. I worked with Allan on projects at Sierra for most of the 1990´s. He was brilliant, funny, and helped improve the performance and morale of any team he worked on. His calm smile helped resolve whatever problems Oracle or PowerHouse could throw his way.

Dear Jan and family
Very saddened to see Allan passing away so early. Though we haven't been in touch for last few years, I will always remember Allan as my first mentor and friend when we moved to Victoria in 2001. His calm, smiling and fun-loving presence made work so much easier. Though we will all miss him forever, we are always here to help and support. Heartfelt condolences, thoughts and prayers from me and my family.

Allan,
Whenever you walked into the cubicle, you had that unmistakable presence-like a true terminator. Your calm and steady smile was always reassuring. I can almost picture you now, coming up to me in the office and calling my name. You will be deeply missed. Rest in peace, my friend. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

To Jan and to Alan's family.
I worked with Alan at Health Care Systems from our early days tucked away in the basement of Royal Columbian Hospital so many years ago. I remember Alan as a happy, talented, team player. A man kind enough to help me move my 400+ pound piano when young friends did such things. Although I didn't see Alan after he relocated to Victoria I knew of him through a mutual friend, Louise, and I was happy to know that he and Jan had created a wonderful family and a happy life. Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of Alan - a man who left a lasting impression.

Jan: heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Our pickleball games will not be the same without his pirouettes, smashes, and ball spins - and his laughter at both good and bad shots. He will be missed.

I worked with Allan for several years at Sierra Systems. In addition to the boring work stuff (at which he was brilliant!), there are many fond memories of playing softball and volleyball with Allan, who always found a way to include his family (Jan, Nicole & Stefan) in everything he did. Heartfelt condolences to Jan, Nicole and Stefan, and all who loved him. Will miss you my friend!

Allan, you left us far too soon. You and I worked in adjacent cubicles for many years, our master database guy, looking after all the needs of our Insight team's reporting data warehouse. They were good times. I remember them so fondly. Always the gentleman, Allan, always patient, always willing to try something to fix up our difficulties.

The attached photo was taken of our team horsing around - the PM was shocked when I wore white socks with sandals, so we decided to shock her back by going all out in a white-sock rebellion. Just for laughs.

My sincere condolances to your family, associates and loved ones. I can't make it down to the celebration of life, but my thoughts are with all of you, now and on that day. Come down from heaven, Allan, and spend a moment or two smiling and laughing with those of us who loved and respecyed you.

As always,
Blessings.

We are overwhelmed with sadness to learn about the sudden passing of Allan, your dear husband, soulmate, best friend, a man that made you laugh and have fun.
