AIKEN - Allan Arthur Schmidt, 82, beloved husband of Diane Dolejs Schmidt, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2023 in Aiken Regional Medical Center after a long and valiant fight with cancer.
Born in Chester, IL, Allan was a son of the late Walter E. and Clara Bewe Schmidt. He grew up in Ida Grove, IA and served in the U.S. Navy after graduating high school. He was a graduate of Iowa State University with a BS in Electrical Engineering. He worked for DuPont in Iowa and Delaware prior to moving to Aiken in 1976. He retired from DuPont and Westinghouse at the Savannah River Site in 1995 after 30 years of dedicated service. Following retirement, he worked for H & R Block for 10 years. He was also a long-time volunteer with VITA. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church,
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Diane; four children, David Schmidt, Beech Island, Peggy Desmarais, Aiken, Michael Schmidt, MD (Beverly), Moultrie, GA, Penny Benedict (Donnie), Williston; grandchildren, Marshall Gunnels, Brandee Poole (Sheldon), Bobby Desmarais, Haley Gunnels, Caleb Schmidt; great-grandchildren, Natalee and Emmalee Poole; brother, Robert Schmidt (Fran), Missouri. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Dr. Clarissa Schmidt.
The family will receive friends Monday evening, August 28th from 6 until 8 o'clock at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be Tuesday morning, August 29th at 10 o'clock at St. Paul Lutheran Church with The Rev. Jeff Erbskorn officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens.
