Sad to hear about Al's passing.
It was always pleasure to have him around in Antwerp as he was a good mentor to introduce you in the world of fluoropolymers.

Sad to hear about Al's passing, being a young tech service engineer in Antwerp in the early 90s, he was a great mentor to me. I never forget the hospitality he and Norma extended to me on my first trip to St Paul, I was always welcome in their home and had fun outings with Kim.
Al and Norma were there for our wedding, they met our first born and Al always occupied a special place in our hearts.

I first met Al and others of the 236 Fluorel team in 1991. Al was the one of the first mentors to teach me how to mill, mold and characterize a QC batch of FKM. As he shared his knowledge and techniques while I milled FC2177 or FC 2174, he stressed the importance of making sure my newly minted Ph.D. was applied in a practical manner and to always keep in mind the most important questions are those that help the customers meet their needs. This was one of the first times, someone stressed that the need in Industrial Research was to keep the end users and customers in mind and since the questions are infinite, it was critical to focus on what will matter to them. We probably all remember Al saying, "well so what? Will it matter to a customer?" His passion for doing good work, having good relationships, being honest and realistic are lessons that Al shared every time I would meet with him.

It was an honor to share time with him and Norma over beers and food while we stayed in Antwerp. And yes, in our first introduction meeting in his basement office of 236, he did say "I have two other questions; "Have you ever worked on a farm and do you drink beer?" I was proud and lucky to have answered yes to both of these questions, I believe the introduction meeting ended (or continued) at Blackies... Rest in Peace Al, the world has become a little dimmer in your absence. Bill C.

I will miss Al on the golf course with his one of a kind swing and amazing putting. He was a work hero to me and I´ll never forget his first interview question to me as a green college student sitting intimidated across from this giant manager behind his big desk - "Do you drink beer?"

I´m glad for all of the Northwoods and other golf trips we had, work outings, poker nights and dinners. Al was truly a good man.

Grief can be so hard, but our special memories help us cope. Remembering you and your loved ones today and always.

I recall vividly the decision we made to send Al to Antwerp to whip the tech service group into shape. His success was spectacular. Loved playing softball with the "Who Cares" (Al's moniker) which spoke to his keeping perspective on what really mattered in life. Condolences to Norma and the family. Al was truly a special "Rubber Duckie."

Al was his own man in so many ways. He was extremely devoted to the Fluorel group and frequently advised fellow employees offering helpful suggestions. His overall knowledge of the Fluorel business was truly extraordinary! My condolences to Norma and the entire family on your loss.

I golfed with Al many times on the MGA Senior Tour. He was the consummate gentleman on the course and a pleasure to play with.

All of us have been touched by this man´s strength of character and his his devotion to his family, friends, coworkers, community, and his love of Christ. Al had a knack for bringing calm to a crisis and wisdom to problem-solving. We all valued him highly as a leader and team member for all of our years together at 3M. Al was a family man, dependable and loyal to those around him, somehow finding that magical balance between job responsibilities and family commitments. He never waivered! Al had a unique way of making you feel welcome and valued, even right in the midst of difficult times. On a personal level, I was fortunate to share time outdoors with him (and other team members) on canoe trips to the Boundary Waters and a few deer hunting trips over the years. He was never without his paperback books, and I think many deer walked right past his stand without being noticed. Joe´s farm, Ray´s resort, or my hunting lease, he always read his paperback while sitting on stand. Al, I know you are with Christ now; no more pain and frustration, no more sickness. Your family and friends love you and will miss you for the short time that we are separated. See you soon.

Al hired me into 3M 50 years ago. From our first meeting, he was always a faithful supporter, a colleague, a teacher and most importantly a great, true friend. He was a family man who shared his wonderful family with all and helped to instill the "feeling of family" within our 3M Fluorel team. Always there for a good time and yes, a couple beers. I´ll never forget him.

I have so many memories of Al, trips to the Boundary Waters, Deer Camp, card games, deep discussions on chemistry and 3M that it could fill a book. He was like a father figure to me and a man I deeply respected. I will miss him.
