He was predeceased by his father, Allen Preston James Sr.; his mother, Marie Perkinson James; and two sisters, Ethel Lee Nugent and Mary Evelyn Poore. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and retired as a Colonial Heights Postal Service worker with over 27 years of service. Mr. James was a 1940 graduate of Petersburg High School who served as a staff sergeant in WWII in the Aleutian Islands and later in the European Theater with the 6th Field Hospital as a medical technician until after the war ended. He was a past president of the Colonial Heights Lion's Club and was a member of the Colonial Heights American Legion Post #284. He was an active church member serving in many leadership capacities. He had an endearing sense of humor and will always be remembered for his gentle spirit, humility, and his strong regard for responsibility and duty. He was a man of great faith who filled the lives of his family and many friends with love, compassion, and joy. He will live on in our hearts forever. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie Jeffries James; his daughters, Susan J. Thompson and husband, Marshall C., of Chesterfield, Cathy J. Fisher and Eric D. Fisher, both of Chester; one great-grandchild, Liam Preston Thompson of Midlothian. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 25, 2010 in the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard, with the Reverend James H. Blankenship officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George. His devoted family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Flowers are welcome or contributions may be made to the Colonial Heights Lion's Club, P.O. Box 151, Colonial Heights, Virginia 23834. Condolences may be registered at www.ealvinsmall.com.

Allen was a real SWEETIE and as much as he will be missed here I am smiling at the thought he is with my daddy now knowing what fun times they shared. Heaven is a sweeter place and we will be with them both again one day.

I am so very sorry for your loss. My hearts goes out to each of you. I remember, while growing up as a teenager in Col Hgts Baptist, he always had a joke or just the right words to get the attention of our group. He was such a sweet man with a great smile. While you know he is now happy in Heaven, I know you will each miss seeing his face in person, hearing the sound of his voice and being able to hug him. Hopefully, knowing how many people cared about him will warm your hearts and enrich his memory.

Love,
Billie

So sorry to hear of your loss. I was born and raised in Colonial Heights, and I remember mr. James very well. He always had a smile and ready to help. I will never forget the comments that he made to me when I would go mail my letters to my fiance , that was stationed in Viet Nam, back in 1967-68. I would write every day. He would always make a comment. He will be missed by all. Prayers are with you all. Ann Carter Strock. Hope Mills, N.C.
