Allen Joseph Karger, age 77, peacefully passed away on Saturday August 3, 2024 surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Cindy (nee Hatzel) for over 50 years. Loving father of Phillip (Sarah) and Meredith Davis (Anthony). Devoted grandfather of Evelyn and Abigail Karger and Grant and Eli Davis. Dear brother of Robert (Carol), George (deceased) (Rose) and Thomas (deceased); and brother-in-Law of Sharon Hatzel. Uncle of Christopher (deceased), Gregory, and Laura Leuty (nee Karger). Beloved son of the late George and Bernice (nee McKenna) Karger.
Al grew up in the east side Cleveland neighborhood around Superior and E 91st, and was a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes High School. He enlisted in the United States Army in March 1966, and served in the Vietnam War with the rank of SP/5. Al returned from service and earned a Bachelor's degree from Cleveland State University and later a Master's degree in Accounting from Baldwin Wallace College. He made his career serving over 30 years as Payroll Manager at the Ferro Corporation. While Al loved watching baseball, playing golf, hiking and traveling, he is best known for a sweet tooth that would not quit. You might find an apple in his car cupholder only to distract from the stash of hostess products under the seat. He was the best-dressed master tinkerer - often found in the garage wearing khakis and a button up shirt. In more recent years, he loved watching his grandkids grow and participate in their chosen activities.
Al is an example of a life well lived. He was warm, welcoming, and had good sense of when to keep his children's secrets from Cindy. He knew he was blessed. You could find him gazing far away at the stars in wonder, and closer at his neighborhood in appreciation. It was easy for him to laugh until he cried. When the hanky made an appearance, you knew he was tickled.
