SCHENECTADY - Allen M. Niles, 84, passed away at home on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. He was born on April 15, 1940, in Mayfield, N.Y., to Albert and Iola Niles.
Allen graduated from Mayfield High School with a regent's diploma. Attended Utica College of Syracuse and received a B. A. in Biology.
Allen worked as a Research Scientist for the New York State Health Department for 31 years. He retired in April 2000.
Allen enjoyed being a Boy Scout leader for many years. He was a volunteer at the Schenectady County library tutoring English as a Second Language.
He was an active member of Lisha's Kill Reformed Church and sang in the choir for over 30 years.
Allen was a member of the Arbor Foundation and studied trees. He enjoyed collecting and learning about wood samples from around the world. He also had elaborate stamp and coin collections.
Allen could always be found reading a book and left behind quite a library. He was also a talented chair caner.
We admired dad's incredible patience in dealing with mom's dementia, it was a testament to their great love and commitment to each other.
Allen was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Joan H. Niles. Survived by his son, Mark S. Niles (Janet L. Niles) of Colonie, N.Y.; daughter, Melissa N. Vicalvi (Matthew J. Vicalvi) of Schenectady, N.Y.; and son, Michael A. Niles (Nicole M. Niles) of Voorheesville, N.Y.
Also survived by grandchildren, David, Joshua, Noah (Jocelyn), Kira, Lilianna, Corbin; and new great-granddaughter, Sophie.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Ernest Niles and Edwin Niles.
A celebration of life for Allen and Joan Niles will be October 30, 2024, at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 181 Troy Schenectady Road, Watervliet, N.Y. 12189 with a viewing from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and a service to begin at 6:00 p.m. Burial will be private.
