Alvin was born April 2, 1949 in Columbus, GA son of the late Alvin Durward Davis, Sr. and Juanita Weathers Head. He joined the US Navy Seabees right out of high school. His service began in Gulfport, MS in 1968, from there he was deployed to Quang Tri Vietnam. He returned to Gulfport to finish his military career. After he was honorably discharged in August of 1970, he and Judy returned to Columbus, GA where he want to work at Georgia Power. During the snow storm of 1970, he was out working to repair downed power lines, he received a message that Judy was in labor with their daughter, Tracy. With a newborn, Alvin decided to change careers and started working at Ryder Truck Rentals as a diesel mechanic. After many years of work and dedication, he was promoted to Area Supervisor of Maintenance he eventually retired after 30 years of working in that position.
Alvin loved anything and everything about cars, especially fast ones. He spent his retirement fooling with hotrods and drag racing. He built Al’s Shop where some weekends their yard would be full of hotrods, his only rule was that if the garage door is open, come on down but if it’s closed, come back tomorrow. He test and tuned many cars in his garage getting them ready for Phenix Dragstrip. Al made many great friends over the years sharing the love of cars and racing. He was a character, he had a great sense of humor and could tell the best stories. Many have said he really knew how to live life and went down with his boots on.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Fowler Davis of Ellerslie, GA; daughter, Tracy Davis of Ellerslie, GA; sister, Martha Cunningham (Marvin) of Hamilton, GA, sister-in-law, Joyce Jones (Larry) of Ellerslie, GA; numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
