Alvin Mertz, 91, of Napoleon, ND, died April 20, 2025 at Eventide, Jamestown. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 25, 2025 at 11:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will take place at the Napoleon City Cemetery.
Alvin was born on January 17, 1934, on the family farm south of Dawson, ND. He was baptized and confirmed at Glueckstal Lutheran church south of Tappen. He attended country schools through the elementary grades when he quit school to help his dad on the farm.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1957-1959 and was a member of the American Legion in Napoleon. Alvin enjoyed collecting coins and collected John Deere toy tractors and other collectables.
Alvin married Edna Veil October 28, 1967, in Bismarck, ND at which time his parents, Reinhold and Frieda (Wanner) Mertz retired and moved to Napoleon, ND. Alvin and Edna took over the farm at that time. Never having had any children, they worked very hard raising cattle and growing grains doing all the work themselves. In 2018 they sold the farm and retired to Napoleon and joined Trinity Lutheran Church.
Alvin is survived by his wife Edna, Eventide, Jamestown; one brother, Quentin (Arlyss) Mertz Gackle, ND; and four sisters, Allean Boschee, Crookston, MN, JoAnne (Larry) Gauper, Fargo, ND; Bernice Rau, Arvada, CO; and Sandra, (Lloyd) Olsgard, Fargo, ND; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Melvin and a sister, Esther Opp.
