Amrita Kochar

Amrita Shergill Kochar, age 84, transitioned peacefully, surrounded by her family, on March 7, 2026, to be at rest with her beloved parents and her deeply missed husband, Col. Jaspal Singh Kochar.

Amrita was born on August 12, 1942, in Jodhpur, India. The fourth of six siblings, Amrita was a soft-spoken and talented young woman with a gentle nature. She often spoke fondly of her full and cherished childhood, which was built on a foundation of love, music, and forward-thinking parents who encouraged her to express herself and follow her heart.

Amrita received her bachelor's degree from Delhi University with a double major in Hindi Literature and Indian Classical Music. She also represented her university and her state in table tennis. Even after the birth of her seventh grandchild, she could often be seen teaching and playing ping pong with them, sharing both laughter and friendly competition.

Amrita took immense pride in being an Army wife and was the epitome of grace and dignity as the first lady of the many regiments her husband commanded during his tenure. She stood steadfast on the front lines of her household, supporting fellow Army families while their husbands served the country on distant battlefields. Within Army circles she was fondly known for her cooking and baking, her homemade jellies and wine, her involvement in theater productions, and the fashion shows and dances she helped organize.

Amrita and her husband made Fort Myers their home for the last 23 years, moving there to support their daughters and help raise their grandchildren. Despite the challenges of declining health, Amrita continued to live her life with acceptance, grace, and dignity. The resounding memories of her boundless love, elegance, grace, warm smile, and gentle loving nature will be deeply missed forever.
