Amy Cornwell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chandler Funeral Home - Ellettsville Chapel on Oct. 1, 2025.
Amy Lou Cornwell, 74, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2025, at Sanders Ridge Health Campus in Mt. Washington, Kentucky. Born on May 1, 1951, in Speedway, Indiana, Amy's life was one of intelligence, a loving nature, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Amy was preceded in death by her father, Henry Prather; her mother, Alberta (Wright) Prather; her brother, Richard Prather; and her beloved husband, John "Phil" Philip Cornwell. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her daughter, Kristen (Cornwell) McGuire and her husband, Richard McGuire; her son, Jonathan Cornwell and his wife, Nichole (Greenlee) Cornwell; and her cherished grandchildren, Michael, Kamryn, Olivia, Kaylee, Madison, and Mackenzie.
A proud graduate of Indiana University, Amy earned her BA in education, which paved the way for a fulfilling career in vocational rehabilitation, working with those who are deaf and hard of hearing. Her passion for communication and accessibility led her to the speech and hearing department at Indiana University, where she played a pivotal role in developing their American Sign Language program. After 30 years of dedicated service, she retired from IU, leaving behind a legacy of progress and inclusivity. Amy's professional achievements were paralleled by her commitment to the community, as evidenced by her active membership in CODA (Children of Deaf Adults). Her work extended beyond the classroom, as she used her skills to interpret for many, including prominent figures such as President Barrack Obama and the Dalai Lama. She and Phil were faithful members of the Ellettsville Christian Church for over 40 years.
Beyond her professional life, Amy found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She was happiest when she was at the beach with her family or spending time with her grandchildren, whom she adored. Her love for her family was the cornerstone of her existence.
Amy's life was a beautiful illustration of what it means to serve others selflessly. Her intelligence shone through in her ability to bridge gaps between worlds, and her loving nature was felt by everyone she touched. Amy will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have been a part of her remarkable journey.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2025 at 11:00 am at Ellettsville Christian Church with Pastor Byron Williams officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 1, 2025 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Chandler Funeral Home in Ellettsville. We were so sorry to hear about Amy´s passing. She and Phil were so kind to my mother, Betty Murray, during the years she lived in Ellettsville with my brother Joe. They would get together for dinners out or just a visit. We will always be grateful for the time they both spent with her.
