Andrew McGee Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 30, 2023.
Andrew Davison McGee was a loving husband, father and grandfather who died on December 22, 2023. Andy had been in declining health since mid-2022.

Andy is survived by his wife of 53 years Catherine Isobel McGee (nee McMillan), his daughter Kyla Elizabeth Falkiner (nee McGee), his son-in-law Glen Murray Falkiner, their two sons Davis George Falkiner and Charles Andrew Falkiner, his son Regan McMillan McGee and his daughter-in-law Rebecca McGee (nee Levy).

Andy was born in Toronto on April 10, 1945 and grew up in a doting home in Orangeville. He was the only child of Dr. Richard Barclay McGee and Jean Elizabeth McGee (nee Davison). Throughout his childhood, he was surrounded by the love of his parents and household staff who Andy always thought of as part of his family.

After finishing boarding school in Toronto, Andy started University in Halifax at Saint Mary's University. He then transferred to the University of Guelph, to be near Catherine McMillan, his later wife who he had met at Taylor Statten summer camps. He stayed at Guelph for his Bachelor's in Economics and his Master's in Politics and Economics before going back to Toronto to attend Osgoode Hall Law School.

For the McGees, the choice was either medicine, building businesses or politics. Andy was an accomplished musician and thought about a career in the music business, but a football injury that severely damaged his hearing made him rethink that path.

During his formative years, Andy's maternal grandfather had a big influence on him. He was a very successful man and his lessons about business would be teachings that Andy would draw on for his entire life.

Andy flourished in business. He was a securities trader and later a pension fund manager who gained widespread respect and recognition as a business leader when he was still in his 30s.

Coming from a prominent family, and having a well-known father-in-law, Andy always stayed away from the media as much as he could. He was a very private and humble man whose family and friends meant everything to him.

A very driven man, Andy left a senior position at Montreal Trust and started his own business in the mid-1980s. He founded McGee Capital Management and built it into a highly respected boutique investment dealer and portfolio manager.

Andy was a kind and decent man who always had a smile on his face and a joke at the ready. He always put others ahead of himself and radiated the small-town values that were at the core of the man he was. This is undoubtedly part of the reason that Andy was such a trusted advisor to so many families.

Andy cherished time with family and friends at the Orangeville Golf and Country Club (his father had won the country club in a poker game!), Rosedale Golf Club, Caledon Ski Club, Granite Club, Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club, and Beaumaris Yacht Club. These and other clubs were an important part of Andy's life as they were where he made some of his fondest memories and closest friendships.

Friends and family are welcome to celebrate Andy's life at Rosedale Golf Club on Wednesday January 10, 2024, at 3pm. Speaking will commence at 3:30pm sharp.

So very sorry to learn that Anrew has passed, and that I did not hear about this until well after the Celebration of Life for him. My deep regrets, thoughts and best wishes to his family and close friends as you deal with this great loss. I was friends with Andrew (Andy) during our high school days, and his father was my doctor during those years.

Our deepest sympathies to Katherine, Kyla and Regan and families. Andy was such a lovely man and a wonderful brother-in-law to my brother Peter Donaldson and my sister-in-law Barbara, Katherine´s sister. Always a smile and interested in others I used to see Andy almost daily working downtown off Queen & Yonge. Rest in Peace.

I knew Andy as a client directly and as an adviser to my own own clients. Thoughtful helpful always available and smiling. A very good man with a big heart. I lost track of him over the last 10 years and was sad to hear of his passing. I met his wife Catherine many years ago in high school. A fine person indeed

Andy was a kind and generous man. He was a mentor and knew the money management business well leading the way in the industry.

He will be sadly missed.

I send my sympathy to Cathy, a childhood friend of my twin brothers. The McMillan's were neighbours in Guelph. I hope she remains well and strong throughout the year. I often think of Andrew and Cathy's lovely kindness to me at Caledon.

I met Andy at Cantab College in 1964 and worked together at Taylor Statten Camps in 1965. We went off to St. Mary's together in 1966 my first year and he introduced me to campus life and friends which I appreciated.
He was fun-loving but also serious about family, friends & his career
Jean and I send our condolences to Catherine and family and look forward to the celebration of life to honour Andy.
