Ancell (Andy) Dwight Lynch passed away into eternal life on September 19, 2025, in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the age of 92.
He was born on July 18, 1933, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Ancell received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University. He worked 16 years at General Electric and was part of the Apollo Space Program from 1961 to 1972. After Apollo, he was involved with Skylab, the United States' first space station, from May 1973 to February 1974. He was thereafter employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) from 1974 until retirement. With a love for his country, Ancell joined the United States Air Force ROTC, followed by active duty and reserves. Ancell was a Boeing B-52 Stratofortress navigator/EWO. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Ancell was a dedicated deacon at First Baptist Concord and taught Sunday School to 3rd and 4th-graders. He also made several mission trips to Southeast Asia through his church's mission program. Ancell was an avid woodworker, carpenter, and tinkerer, always looking to improve his home. He also had a lifelong passion for computers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Annie Lynch, and his brother, Gerald S. Lynch, all of Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was also preceded in death by his in-laws, J. Willard and Maud Johnson, and brothers-in-law Judson and Glendon Johnson, all of Saucier, MS.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ona Frances; sons, Dwight (Anna), David (Denise), and Gary; daughters, Karen Strong (Robert) and Rebecca Smith (Neal); eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday, October 6, 2025, at First Baptist Concord Church (11704 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37934). A Celebration of Life will follow at 7:00 PM with Dr. Jon Cormack officiating the service. A graveside service with military honors will take place at 10:00 at on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery (2200 E Governor John Sevier Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37920).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a charitable donation be made to the Mission of Hope (https://missionofhope.org).
