"Annie," as she was known to family and friends, was born in Travnik, Slovenia, on August 10, 1905, and came to the United States at the age of 6 months. She spent her early youth in Bonifas, Michigan, and then moved with her family to Phelps, Wisconsin. She attended high school there for 2 years before moving to Chicago to take up employment there.
In 1925, she moved to the Traunik area to marry Frank H. Bartol, who preceded her in death in March of 1996. A "babe in arms" (a phrase she often used) when she moved to the United States, she was a pioneer of sorts, merging the ethnic traditions her family brought with the American ones she encountered as she grew up. She had a way that brought out the best in both.
Gardening, cooking, baking, caring for, and worrying about a family that included four children, 12 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren occupied most of her waking hours for the first 70 years of her married life. The worrying part continued (she was the acknowledged local champion in that arena) after she fell and broke her hip in 1995 and was condemned to inactivity, which was totally alien to her. Annie was a longtime member of the Alger County Historical Society and strongly supported its activities.
In addition to her husband and six brothers and sisters (John, Ludwig, Frank, Mary, Alvina, and Dolores), her son Donald (Louette) Bartol predeceased her in February 1987. She is survived by a son, Frank R. (Judith) Bartol; two daughters, Margaret (the late Charles) Newberry and Kathryn (Don) Galin; and a brother, Robert (the late Antonia) Lustick; as well as the grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
